What's the point of the activity map in NIS 2011?

I just upgraded from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011, and overall I like what I see. However, I feel that the real estate at the bottom of the main UI is wasted. What's the point of the activity map? Sure, it looks pretty, but to me it serves no purpose. What real use does it have? It would have been a lot more useful if that space had a running log of the last files that were checked in real time, or of applications that connected to the Internet last, or some other status indication.

Also, it's a pity that the buttons on the bottom row are less than useful (to me at least). I don't use Online Family or Online Backup. This means that the bottom third, to me, is wasted space. I understand that Symantec wants to push its other products, but did they really have to use so much space on the main UI to do this? Such a pity...

How do you feel about this? Agree? Disagree?

Thanks!
