When AntiVirus is on, my whole system hangs for 10-15 seconds, then is OK for a couple of minutes

I've tried reinstalling with no impact. Ditto with LiveUpdates. I'm running MAC OS X 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro. From the Internet Security suite, AV is the only one that impacts my system this way. HELP.
