When cleaning up temporary files, Norton Utilities 16 "hangs" after processing 32767 files.

My sister brought her Windows 7 PC (HP G72) because fan was out. When I got it running, it was a mess (software-wise), running very slowly, and I was going to clean it up some  before I gave it back to her.  I downloaded Norton Utilities 16 and first cleaned the registry, which had 3,200+ errors that the utilities found and fixed.  I then ran the file cleanup.  There were apparently a huge number of extraneous files in both the Temporary files and Internet Explorer Browser files sections that were eligible for deletion.  When cleaning the IE files, it hung up at 32767, which happens to be 2^15-1.  Progress was 33% (includes files cleaned in previous sections).   I am wondering if perhaps they are using 16 bits to hold the number of files found and the program is hanging when that number overflows.  Then again, this could be coincidence.  I left it running overnight and it was still at the same place it was the night before, 33% progress and 32767 files found in the  Internet Explorer Browser files section.  I canceled the cleanup and then restarted it.  It stopped in the same place, at 33% progress and 32767 files found.  I could go in and delete the files manually, but I'd like to know why Norton cannot do it.  Does anyone know why the program is hanging up?
