Where do the "bad" files go?

Hi,

Weird situation. I have a database file that I send to and from my company a few times a day and it ALWAYS sets off AV scanners we don't know why but my admin said to just set your AV to ignore it.

Anyway I did not do that yet and saved the file to my desktop and suddenly Norton popped up with a warning, said it was infected and deleted it. I looked and looked within the program and there does not seem to be a way to recover the file. Where does Norton Quarantine these files and how can I get it back now?

Thanks,

If it quarantined the file, you can go to History>drop down to quarantine> and restore the file.  You should have the option to ignore, which will add it to auto-protect and sonar exclusions.

If it said that it was deleted, it is gone.  You will need to add the file manually to auto-protect and sonar exclusions first, then download it again.

Hi,

I am sorry if I did not make my situation clearer. As soon as I saved the file in question to my desktop I got a pop up from Norton saying the file was infected and the risk level was high. There were no options but to click details which told me a bit about what it found, gave me a link to go to to see about what it found but no way to ignore it, delete it or restore it. It was just an informational pop up. Norton had already removed it (removed is a better word because I am sure it is sitting in Norton's quarantine folder, if I knew where it was and how to get into it that would solve my problem.) So I had no options.

Now when I go into the history of what Norton did all I can get on this file is details I get no restore or other options which is why now I wonder why I didn't get the option to ignore it in the first place AND where is it now and how can I get it back?

Thanks,

What Norton product is on your machine and what is the version number?  It should be under support>about.

What happens to a file is determined by what part of the program took exception to it.  If auto-protect took it, it should be in quarantine, which is where I pointed you first. Open the Norton interface.  If you click on History in NIS it will take you to the history screen with a drop down menu.  There you will find resolved threats, unresolved threats, quarantine and a number of other options. Click on quarantine.  If you find the file listed in quarantine, click more details and a screen will come up with the required options, possibly tabs.

If none of that is there, you have a problem.  You either do not have NIS, or it did not go to quarantine, in which case, as I said, it has been deleted. If you are running one of the corporate versions, I will send you to that forum because we don't have any info on them here.

OK, I followed your instructions on where to go and found the Quarantine setting where I can restore the file.

Thanks,
