Where's my desktop gadget gone?

just had this latest update, and my desktop gadget has disappeared. I've no idea if I'm covered or not without opening up Norton everytime I want to check. What has gone wrong? Windows don't show the gadget on their list anymors, so how can I get it back?

Hi there, and thanks. Yes I've just done an upgrade that came over the ether to me.

Fair enough if the gadget doesn't work anymore, so if you could advise me how to set up the alternative that would be most useful.

Many thanks.

Go to the System Tray and left click on the ^ arrow ( on the left in the image) and select Customize

This will open a page as shown below.  For the Symantec System Framerwork, click on the down arrow and select Show Icons and Notifications - OK.

System Tray -customize.PNG

This should give you the Norton Icon (yellow square, globe outline, and a Green checkmark - meaning all GO!  It will also display other images ( Red X for example) is anything goes wrong.

You will also notice that a right click of this Icon also brings up a menyu as shown below so that you can do other things rom the desktop - as shown below:

Hope that gets you set up!

Excellent, thank you. I can see at a glance that everything is OK, which is all I'm after.

Glad you got it done and it meets your needs.

Just a side question
Can you also double click the norton icon in the system tray to bring up the GUI and from there check history, run a quick scan, etc?

Hi Calls,

No need to - a single left click on the icon will open the GUI, also a right click and selecting Open NIS wil opent he GUI!!

If you have Windows 7, you can pin the icon to the task bar and left clicking it will bring up a more comprehensive list of menu. Right clicking it and dragging upwards will also do.

There was a campaign last year to bring back the gadget, but it fizzled out, and fell on deaf ears at Symantec, hers hoping for version 21

Norton Gadget is not in the latest version as Windows abondoned the feature of gadgets on windws 8. The new Norton is designed to be more compatable with the windows 8.

The reason Symantec dropped gadgets is that Microsoft has dropped support for them. There is a security risk in using them.

See this Microsoft Security Advisory. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2719662

I have the same options except the "Check for New Version" for my trial copy of NIS 2013? Why would that be?

Hi vista,

I would guess because it is a trial version and the trial you downloaded is the most current version.
