If you plan to try/use a different product to one installed even as a trial on the purchased machine, with security products above all make sure you uninstall the first product before you try the second. Don't Delete it of course but use the Uninstall in Uninstall Programs and if the product supplier has a special tool, run that afterwards to make sure no traces are left that could upsset the next installation.
On the range of products that Vejdin listed I would concentrate on choosing between Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security. Both use the same antivirus engine as Norton AntiVirus and my personal opinion, especially if you have VISTA on the laptop, is that third party utilities are less and less useful and more and more dangerous!
So between N360 and NIS I would say that if you want a Fit and Forget solution go for N360; if you want to be able to tweak the security system then go for NIS. As Vejdin says, N360 does include a simple backup system for personal files which is not in NIS but you may have such a utility already.

you may find a feature that stops warnings etc from interrupting you to be important and you may find a low impact on the system to be particularly important.
In this case I would be inclined to go for NIS 2008 at this very moment because NIS2009 is due to come on the market this month -- don't worry if you buy NIS2008 you can upgrade for free for the balance of your subscription -- whereas an updated version of N360 is not due until perhaps the spring of 2009.
NIS 2009 is remarkable in that it has been completely rewritten from the ground up with a new philosophy on how it works and how it updates and not only is it very low in its call on system resources but it has a Silent mode that does what I refer to above to stop interruptions.
If you want to know a bit more about NIS2009 have a look in the Public Beta Forum here on this community site:
Norton Internet Security Public Beta
If the public beta is still available you might like to try it out but I don't know how long it will run for since it is a beta -- I'd advise you to wait for the market launch and go ahead with NIS2008 if all this makes sense to you!
But in either case you can download a trial version of either N360 or NIS2008 from the Symantec website that will run for 30 days I think it is and by then the retail NIS2009 should be out I imagine.
If you are not in the USA/Canada or are using a localized version of Windows, make sure you download from the website for your country or you may have some compatibility problems.

As huwyngr mentioned, I would go for either Norton 360 or N.I.S. because there is one critical Feature that is not in N.AV and that is Norton Confidential, which protects you from Fake Web Sites which can host Viruses and the like. N.AV is a very good product, but N.I.S./N. 360 offer more protection which you need in this day and age.
Hello,
Before I start sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in I wasn't to sure what category it would fit into but anyway , I recently purchased a new Sony Vaio laptop and it came bundled with a free trial of McAfee but I would much prefer Norton installed. Its been a while since I last used Norton I think it was around 2006 the last time I touched it but the question I am asking is this what Norton product is best for me?
I use my laptop for :
Internet
College work
Gaming
Windows Live Messenger
Music
Watching DVD's
I was thinking of going for Norton 360 but does anyone else have any other suggestions on a different version to choose.
Thanks
George
Hello George!
You can use Norton Product Selector to choose a product depending on your activities or, take a look at this Comparison Chart.
As you don't (or rarely use) your computer to bank and shop online, Norton AntiVirus is good for you, but if you need to backup important files too (College work for example), Norton 360 is a good choice (the program has the ability to backup files to a secure online storage or different media types). Norton 360 also optimizes your PC by removing unwanted files, cleaning-up Windows registry and performs disk optimization (defragmentation) - it's all automatic. Here is a short and easy to understand description that can help you make your choice:
Norton AntiVirus - basic protection (good for Web surfing, Email, Gaming, Chat ...)
Norton Internet Security - complete protection (suitable when you use the internet to bank and shop online and for everyday needs)
Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition - complete system maintenance (standart and premier editions include Norton AntiVirus)
Norton 360 - complete protection, backup and PC tune-up
