All of a sudden a file named “StealthBrowse Installer.exe” started downloading. I could not stop it so i shut off the machine. When i restarted the machine I have a new background process in taskmanager - StealthBrowse (7) . Is this malware ? ? ?
Win 10 Pro, 10.0.19045, build 19045
Norton 360, 25.5.10141.1667
no error message
started a full scan right after start up - still running - finally finished - no problems found.2025-05-30T05:00:00Z
TIA
@George_Duba There is an app on the Microsoft Store that is legitimate, that being said. If you didn’t initiate this download it could be malware posing as a legitimate app. That is the part of your post that is troublesome. I would remove the app in Control Panel>Apps and Features and reboot. See whether it returns. If it does there is an issue to be resolved. Have a look at your app install settings as well.
Conversely, I would also download and run a full system scan with Malwarebytes, just for more assurance. You can get it here. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
Please let us know your results so we can follow up.

Hi SoulAsylum
I opened up control panel, programs & features. Stealth Browse was not there. I opened task manager and there it was with (7) sub processes. I selected end process. I did a cold reboot and checked task manager again and there it was again. Since i had deleted "StealthBrowse_installer.exe when i first saw it in the download folder i went to the recycle bin and brought it back. Not sure how the recycle bin works - would it show an error if the file had been partially over written? Anyway it restored the file to the download folder. So i submitted it to VirusTotal. They confirmed my upload but so far no verdict. Never used their site B4 so not sure how it works. Maybe i have to join or something. I ran Norton 360 full scan and it didn’t find the process or whatever keeps reloading it. Since i now have recovered the file from the recycle bin it is 1,104,440 bytes. So i submitted it directly to Norton and the verdict was “No Threats Found”
At the time of the download i was trying to go to the schwab dot com web site. I may have misspelled “schwab” and that particular misspelling is owned by a malware site.
Well those are the limits of what i know and can do so . . .
Thanks for the quick response

I suggest strongly that you run a full scan with Malwarebytes. MBAM focuses on things Norton doesn’t and may find something needing removed. To say the least this didn’t come from a legit source if I read the posts correctly I would still have concern because it is resident in system memory.
