I have similar problem! WHY am I asked to renew my credit card details in order to make it easy for Norton to take an unspecified amount of money to renew my contract. Either I choose to stay with a very good Anti Virus Plus cover at a price I can afford or I cancel the contract. My credit card has expired and I will not be replacing it with my new one. I would have preferred to talk to an human being but that is difficult these days! If Norton whishes' to contact me, they have my details but I guess I will have to put up with daily on-screen warnings. Most annoying.

Your subscription may include product, service and/or protection updates and features that may be added, modified or removed subject to the acceptance of the License and Services Agreement.

Virus Protection Promise: To be eligible, you must have a qualifying subscription that is automatically renewing. If a Norton expert is unable to remove the virus from your device, then you may receive a refund based on the actual price paid for the current term of your qualifying subscription. If you have a bundle (a qualifying subscription from NortonLifeLock purchased with either another offering from NortonLifeLock, or a third party offering), your refund will be limited to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of only your qualifying subscription for the current term, not to exceed the total bundled price paid. Any refund will be net of any discounts or refunds received and less any shipping, handling and applicable taxes, except in certain states and countries where shipping, handling and taxes are refundable. The refund does not apply to any damages incurred as a result of viruses. See norton.com/virus-protection-promise for complete details.

Norton Community does not have access to your Norton account, subscription details nor payment method.
Norton sends (for annually recurring subscriptions) email notice (with price, term, and related details) usually about 30-45 days before current term expiry.
Users report Norton pulls recurring subscription payment usually about 30-45 days before current term expiry.
Users report approx 30-45 days before current term expire...not being able to change Automatic Renewal Service setting.
While I agree with what you are saying, you missed the point of the question. Why enforce automatic renewal only to offer cancellation of it "at any time"? There must be more too it than what is obvious
Not every company does this, most will offer automatic renewal as an option (my VPN does this) you don't have to take it up to create an account.
Your leaving Nortons and so will I be, how many other will leave because of this?????
It's for the same reason a lot of 'services' do this kind of thing nowadays. They're hoping you'll forget and they'll be able to charge you twice what you'd otherwise pay for next year's software. It's why they offer more time to remain subscribed when I went to unsubscribe immediately after registering my copy.
It's the same reason norton keeps trying to advertise more products and services to me through desktop pop up ads.
It's the same reason norton added in a crypto miner into their client that they take a cut of.
It all boils down to money. You have it. Norton wants it, and as much of it as it can get.
It's the reason as soon as my subscription runs out, I'm leaving norton for good. I've owned norton products on and off going back to Norton Utilities 6 and Norton Desktop for Dos. But these tactics? It feels too similar to malware for me, and I'm not a cow to be milked.
