Why does AVG Free scan more than Norton Internet Security?

I'm using both the free version of AVG and the full paid version of Norton Internet Security 2011. I know it is not reccomended. However, when I finish a scan with AVG, I noticed AVG scans more objects than NIS2011 scanned items.

As you can see in the picture, AVG Free scanned 3.3 million "objects" and Norton only scanned about 595,000 "items".

Why is this? Is there a difference between "objects" andd "items"? and what are they?
