So I have been hearing that 2009 is supposed to be much better, so i decided to actually test this claim. The first test I put any security software to is detecting and removing MyWebSearch. So I went through the trouble of readying a virtual machine, installing and updating vista x64 all the way. Then I install the 15 day trial of Norton 2009 Antivirus. I am impressed by the speed and excellent user interface design. Next I install MyWebSearch from the website Smileycentral which is known for previously distributing known malware. Norton detected absolutely nothing when I installed MyWebSearch. I did a full scan, and still nothing detected. Norton goes so far as to consider tracking cookies more of a threat then MyWebSearch, I find that extremely perplexing.
I searched this forum and it seems everyone agrees that MyWebSearch is a problem program. So why doesn't Norton detect it? What should I tell my customers that buy this software when I tell them that Norton won't alert you to the most common peice of questionable software in the world? This is a serious post I am not trying to start a flame here, I want a serious answer. What is the logic to removing cookies but not MyWebSeach? Not even notifying the user it could be a potential problem? Does Symantec provide a seperate tool for removing MyWebSearch? I am so confused because this 2009 edition has been hyped for its superior ability and the fact that it changes from the old ways of Norton.
