Why does the Firewall have a program entry for Notepad?

I was nosing through the NIS Firewall program rules, and noted that rules had automatically been created to allow Notepad.exe to connect to the internet.  As a simple text editor that is incapable of, say, active links (at least in Win XP), why would Notepad need to connect to the internet?  What could have occurred to generate the rule in the first place?  Thanks.
