Why haven't I received the 16.8 update yet?

Hi elsewhere

My computer was on the last day of my 3 year in home warranty when the hard drive died. Since it was still under warranty, the company that custom built my computer sent me a new hard drive by overnight express and then they sent a technician to my house to install the drive and he also installed my windows xp pro and got that up to date and he installed some of my programs also. My son usually does this type of thing for me, but wouldn't you know that the hard drive died around midnight of the day he was leaving for vacation early in the morning, so he couldn't do anything to help me with that. I back up only the things which I deem to be important to me and some of the programs. When he got back from vacation, my son restored the things that I needed to be restored. He never set up a backup system image for me. I just back up the stuff that is important to me to my external hard drive.

Hi Tim

Thanks for letting me know. I shall try to wait patiently till the beginning of Feb and hopefully, I will get the new updated 16.8 patch and it will work ok for me.

Hi floplot

Clearly your current backup process works to your satisfaction as you were back up and running with your game on your new hard drive. As mijcar suggested, a backup system image would have enabled you to 'continue where you left off' after the hard drive failure; the technician could have restored your backup for you after the new hard drive was installed. Something you should consider for the future because you wouldn't have been so dependent on your son's vacation plans to get your system back up and running...:smileywink:

While I know from your previous posts that your apprehensive about upgrading to NAV 2010, have you actually considered the worst case scenario with regards to your Unreal Tournament' game?

At worst, SONAR 2 is going to have an issue with the game's EXE (or supporting EXE)  file/s and will take whatever action (if any) it sees fit. I'm sure all your saved games and history files will remain untouched as this data wouldn't be stored in an executable file that SONAR 2 would have an issue with. If the worst happens, then make sure that NAV 2010 has been updated to the latest version (you know the drill) and then copy or restore any of the offending files from a backup. Alternatively, take a copy of your game folder/data directories beforehand; that way you'll be able to restore a file instantly should SONAR 2 make a particular file unrecoverable.

At best, and most likely, the upgrade to 2010 will proceed without issue and your system is up-to-date with the latest Security technology that you've paid for.

Ultimately, and with all due respect, it's your call.

Hi Tim

I guess NAV/NIS 2009 update still isn't ready to be downloaded to the few people who still haven't received it? I see that the 2010 people are getting theirs now.

Hi floplot,

The plan is still the same as it was in this post - http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Why-haven-t-I-received-the-16-8-update-yet/m-p/192602#M96276

If you haven't received the update after the beginning of next month, please let us know!

Hi

I received my update to version 16.8.0.41 on Wed. night. I rebooted as it said I should. I saw I had a 2nd icon on my desktop for NAV. I figured the update would take away the old icon, but it didn't. On Wed. night, both icons would bring up the new version of the program. I rebooted again today and the 2nd icon was still there. I discovered that the old engine was still there last night after the update, but today the old one was gone and the old icon didn't work any more. So I deleted the old icon and the new one seems to be working just fine so far. I have the new version now about 24 hours and so far so good.

Hi

I received my update to 16.8.0.41 late Wed. nite. I'm using xp pro sp 3 IE 7. I rebooted to finish the installation. All seemed to go well except I had an extra NAV icon on my desktop. I figured that the update would take away the old icon, but it didn't. I also noticed at that time I still had the older engine in that folder also besides the new one.  Both the old icon and the new one opened up NAV and it showed the new version number regardless of which Icon I used. On Thurs. I rebooted again and discovered that the old engine was then gone. I still had the 2 icons though. I tried the old one and that one no longer worked as I figured it shouldn't with the old engine gone. The new icon continued to work fine. So I deleted the old icon and put the new one in it's place. All seems to be working fine with it as far as I can tell.

Did this update do anything about scanning email from non standard ports? I know about the other layers of protection, but still would like it scanned the same way as emails are when you are allowed to use the old standard ports.

Hi floplot,

Those changes were not made. This update was to fix a few bugs, and not introduce new features. For more information, see the announcement
