Hi,
I am curious as to why Internet Security 2010 uses roughly 13 MB of RAM when idle for 5 minutes after my PC has started? Internet Security 2009 used only 8 to 9 MB of RAM. Isn’t Internet Security 2010 supposed to be faster and better?
I have the Add On Pack for Internet Security 2010 installed since I use the Anti Spam feature. I also had the Add On Pack installed when I used for Internet Security 2009.
I read the report from http://www.passmark.com/AVReport and its states that Internet Security 2010 only uses 10 MB of RAM when idle. I have never seen it go down that low.
I am a big Symantec fan and have used Internet Security since 2006 (upgrading each year). I am really impressed by Internet Security 2010. A full (manually started) system scan (which I ran yesterday) took only 1 hour 45 minutes compared to Internet Security 2009’s time of 2 hours 58 minutes ((manually started and ran three days ago). My PC actually has more files on it now than when 2009 scanned it. I wasn’t using my PC while either of the scans was running.
The Identify Safe of Internet Security 2010 is faster to auto fill logins for web pages and is faster to respond when selecting logins from its toolbar in Internet Explorer 8. Running a Quick Scan (manually started) finishes far quicker than Internet Security 2009. Web pages also seem to lad slightly faster with 2010 than with 2009. I am really impressed by the new 2010 version.
The only thing than does not impress me is the slightly higher RAM usage. I am willing to overlook this since the new 2010 version is noticeable faster in the areas mentioned above. The PC I ran the above trials on has 2 GB of RAM with about 1.6 GB free after Windows has booted, so RAM isn’t a problem. This laptop runs Windows XP with SP3 (all updates from http://update.microsoft.com have been installed). My other PCs have 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM (they both run Vista Ultimate x64 edition with SP2, both have all Windows Updates installed) so I am not short of RAM. I just prefer that a security program have the smallest memory footprint possible.
I would be interested to hear people’s opinion and any ideas about the RAM usage. Thanks in advance.
