Try moving to a website and see what Privacy Guard reports.

Privacy Guard in Norton is a browser-level protection feature focused on blocking trackers, cookies, and data collection on websites.

Why it shows as “Paused” on non-web sites

• It only activates on actual web pages (http/https URLs) where tracking can occur.
• On non-web content — such as local files, intranet pages, browser settings pages, or any non-HTTP location — there is nothing for it to protect against, so it automatically pauses.
• This is normal behavior and not an error. Norton shows the paused state to indicate the feature is not needed in that context.

Quick tips

• The status will switch back to active as soon as you visit a regular website.
• If you want to confirm it’s working properly, visit a known tracker-heavy site and check the status again.
• No action is required unless you’re seeing the paused state on actual websites (which would be a different issue).

This design helps keep the feature lightweight and only running when relevant.

If Privacy Guard shows “Paused” on actual websites, that’s not normal and usually points to one of these issues:

Common causes

• The Norton browser extension is disabled or needs to be re-enabled.
• A conflict with another extension, browser setting, or security tool (Malwarebytes Web Protection is a frequent culprit here).
• Norton’s Web Protection or Privacy Guard feature has been manually turned off in the settings.
