Hi, I just finished installing NSBU just now and I can't help but notice the NS I downloaded from www.norton.com/latestnsbu does not come with the latest protection updates (as shown), more over, the protection update comes with it was dated 2 Apr 2017.
Shouldn't Norton make sure that every new installation comes preloaded with the latest definition so that the protection would be matter or more effective from the moment we installed it?
I understand we should run LiveUpdate until there's no more update being offered. But the homescreen stated that "You Are Protected", this is kinda contradicted with the fact the protection update is out of date already by more than 2 months.
Maybe Norton should either show a message prompting users to update asap or they should deliver every installation with the latest definition, let's said has the online installation it updated on a weekly basic to ensure maximum protection.
Just sharing my opinion here, hope Norton would notice about this.
Thanks.

It is my understanding that if you obtain the product using the Norton Download Manager, you will get the latest virus definitions in the download package so the product will be up to date when the installation is finished. If you download just the installer from the download link, you will not get the latest signatures.
Hello
Even if the latestxxx is a version behind, Live Update does update the program quickly after you install it unless you have a very slow connection or are on dialup..
Thanks.
Thank you for the suggestion, but it now seem that Norton is capable of providing protection even without the latest definition update, I guess it should be okay then. Plus, I think it make sense to delay latest update as to avoid problems, as it kinda reminds me on how Windows Updates often screw up my laptop before Microsoft acknowledge it and pull back the update.
Dear peterweb,
Thank you for the clarification. Appreciate it. Well, if SONAR indeed effective at bocking new threat (new ransomware and such), I guess I should be fine with it then.
When you use the latestXXX download link, as you have seen, you do not always get the absolute latest version. When a new version is released, eg 22.9.x.x, Norton usually waits some time before updating the latestXXX link, in case there are problems with the version. We have seen this in the past.
As for updating the definitions, these are updated multiple times a day, so to compile a new installer every time new definitions were released would be a full time job for one employee, 24/7. A little unrealistic and not really needed with all the other layers of protection in the Norton Product.
When the product says you are protected, it is not lying. The real time Sonar protection will still protect you until you run the LiveUpdate to get the latest definitions.
Interesting observation. You could post it in the Product Suggestions board which is monitored by Symantec Staff.
