I hope somone can explain this to me.
Most of the time, when we update Norton Internet Security, or Norton Antivirus, no restart is required. However, when there are major changes to the program, a restart is sometimes required. I understand this, and though it is a minor annoyance, I understand why it is necessary. Here is what I CANNOT understand.
Usually, (but not always) when there is a restart requied, the program ends up in a brand new folder. If you are someone who just lets things situate themselves as they please, you probably don't even notice it. But if you are one of those of us who prefer to arrange things according to their personal preferences, this causes a major annoyance. It results in the following things happening:
1. If I had previously moved the program on the Start menu (which I almost always do), it creates a new folder of shortcuts for the Start menu, and, of course, leaves my previous (now useless) folder where it was.
2. It repopulates my desktop with a scattering of shortcuts. The only one I actually WANT on my desktop (the Live Update shortcut), it does NOT put there, but it DOES put a shortcut for the program itself (which I don't need, since I can access it with a single click from the System Tray.
3. Of course, as an adjunct to this, my PREVIOUS desktop shortcut for Live Update will no longer work, because it points to the wrong folder.
The upshot of all of this is that I have to spend about 15 minutes cleaning up my desktop, my Start menu, and creating new shortcuts that point to the right folder. MOST of this would be unnecesary if the folder didn't change every time--that is, the existing Live Update shortcuts, the Start menu shortcuts, etc would still work just fine, except for the fact that they all point to the old installation folder.
I realize that this may be an issue with a relatively few people who organize and manage their Start menus and desktop shortcuts. But can anyone explain to me why it is necessary to create a new folder for the program every time there is a major update?
