Why NIS 21.1.1.7 not through Live Update

Hi all,

I just found out about NIS 21.1.1.17 not being pushed via Live Update.

Some questions...

1) Do I really need it? - I would have to configure all my custom settings all over again, right? :smileyfrustrated:

2) Will this be "wrapped up" in the next Product Update distributed via Live Update?

Ciao!

No idea why its not pushed via update but all your settings are preserved.

Visit the norton update centre (Manual Edition)

http://updatecenter.norton.com/Manual/ChooseProduct

Select Norton Internet Security

And for version even if you have version 21 Selection Version 20!

Download Manager will grab the latest update "21.1.1.7"

And do a clean upgrade of norton bringing you to the latest version along with keeping your settings intact.

Enhanced protection i believe it offers with a few fixes which will benifit, it only took 30 seconds to download and upgraded in about 15 seconds so its pretty easy to get.

3. Why is this update only available via Norton Update Center and not LiveUpdate?

A combination of factors led to this being only available via Norton Update Center. In short, we wanted to distrubute this minor update as nimbly and quickly as possible.

A key factor is timing -- we wanted to make this update available quickly with as little delay as possible. While it may seem like a simple procedure, adding the element of LiveUpdate distribution is a time-consuming endeavour to be done correctly.

Another factor is resources -- we wanted to focus our resources on our next update, and making that available through all the usual channels. Given these factors, using the Norton Update Center as the distribution point was the best solution.

Normally minor updates released via the Norton Update Cneter as this one has been, will be included in the next major update.

Hi.

@gibby95 - Select an earlier version (V20 instead of V21)? Bit confused here! Seems illogical.

@yank - Yes, I had read all of that. I'm more concerned that my custom settings will be trashed. Importante!

Did you upgrade already? How was your experience? Do I really need to upgrade or wait until the next LU product update?

Cheers and thanks,

Flavio :)

I have upgraded to the latest experience and the version is fine.

The reason you pick version 20 is that if you pick version 21 your already at version 21.

So the update centre will tell you , you have the latest major version (it ignores the minor updates)

But if you enter 20 it thinks your major release behind and grabs the latest update and updates your version

21.0 to version 21.1. Hopefully that made sense to you :smileylol:

Just an FYI for other users following this thread - Veeber reported here that the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool is now installing the latest v. 21.1.1.7 of NIS.  The offline (standalone) installer at www.norton.com/latestnis has also been updated to the v.21.1.1.7 installer for NIS.

Illogical??  Absolutley!  Also giggy95 is correct in what they explained.

But it appears an attempt to make something (version check) work as it was not deisgned to work.  IMHO, the version check on Update Center is set up to bring users from one major version up to the next major version (an upgrade as I call it) and ignores the minor version updates in between, so in order to make it work, the users have to lie about their version so it will pick up the old version (V 20) and update to the 21.1.1.7 that is currently on the Update C enter, rather than the Norton folks writting the program so it'll pick up minor version changes  Norton will claim that is not the intention of the new version check to spot minor updates, but it does suit Norton to have the users lie to the tool to make it downlod the "latest offering from Update Center".   Too bad the users can not win in this situation. :smileyfrustrated:

Yes, I have updated already to 21.1.1.7 and maintained all my settings as well as my Local Vault.  The update is actually a complete download and that is why the NRnRT and all (NAV,NIS,N360) the "latest" downloads are up to v 21.1.1.7 as Imacri has pointed out.  I had no problems with the update.

Do you really need to update?  Actually it is your choice.  This is a minor update and in cases in the past, will be incorporated into the next major update - as in when the version changes to 21.2.

Cheers and thanks,

Flavio :)

Why I cant get over, is how Norton expect “general customers” to find out about this!..I only found out by coming back into the forums to have a look around, there must be 1000’s of PC’s out there who don’t even know this update exists! This does not make sense!

@surfer1000,

My thoughts exactly. The *excuse* about not being able to be pushed via Live Update is BS.

IMO of course!

Agita!

P.S. Not 1000's of PC's - probably millions!

I don't recall anyone stating that they couldn't do it via LiveUpdate. It was someone's judgement call that they could get this update out faster with the manual update, but it sounds like it will eventually be included in the Live Update channel. Whether it was a good or bad judgement call isn't for me to decide.

Hi surfer1000:

Forum administrator Tony Weiss has posted instructions here on how users can subscribe to automatic e-mail notifications for product updates posted in the Product Update Announcements board.  I recently created an automatic notifications for Norton Internet Security updates this way, and added a subscription for Firefox updates just to be sure that I'm e-mailed each time Symantec releases an update for the Norton Toolbar for my Firefox browser.

I have no idea why Symantec stated that factors like "timing" and "resources" were the reasons why the v. 21.1.1.7 update was released via the Norton Update Center instead of LiveUpdate, but my best guess is that they felt that this minor update would only be beneficial to a small number of users.  Symantec's statement here that v. 21.1.1.7 includes "minor AutoProtect backend fixes" is so vague that it's impossible for users currently having issues with v. 21.1.0.18 to know whether the update might fix their problem.

If it was an absolute necessity for ALL Norton users to update to this latest version, a different approach would probably have been used. If you do not see any of the problems on your system that the update addresses, you do not HAVE to update.

Those users that have been having problems and have come to the forums for help, would have a good chance of seeing the posts and announcements of the update.
