Bump again…waiting almost a year for a resolution to this
Katie,
Any news?
Hi All,
Please make sure you have the latest Norton Family on the monitored machines. The latest version is 2.6.0.71. To make sure you have the latest version, right click on the Norton Family icon in the system tray and select “About Norton Family”.
Please check again to see if you are still experiencing the issue.
Thanks,
Katie
Sadly the problem has not been fixed. I updated Java from 6 to 7 and it did not work. In order to be quite sure, I then did the following:
- Uninstalled NF
- Uninstalled Java
- Rebooted
- Installed the latest version of Java (Java SE 7 Update 17)
- Checked that this worked in both IE10 and Chrome 25 (worked OK)
- Installed the latest version of Norton Family (2.6.0.71)
- Checked whether Java worked in IE and Chrome: Error message for both.
Another half an hour of my life wasted. It is a pity; I really wanted this to work. Maybe others could confirm?
Katie,
I'd really like to test 2.6.0.71, honest, I would. But I can't seem to get a hold of it.
This PC that I'm on had 2.6.0.56 (it hasn't been used in awhile).
I ran Liveupdate, which took it up to 2.6.0.61.
I rebooted and ran Liveupdate again - still 2.6.0.61
I rebooted and logged into NOF and clicked the download link and installed it - still 2.6.0.61.
So, pray tell how does one get hold of .71?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Knackiedoo,
Thanks for the update. We will check it further.
Thanks,
Katie
Dan
Are you sure you are not looking at the "Search Signature Version"? That (and the Social Networking Signature) is currently on 2.6.0.61
The Norton Family Version should be 2.6.0.71

No, NOF 2.6.0.73 is NOT letting Java 7 run.
Go to http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Click on Verify Java Version
With Java 7 update 17 installed, it does nothing - just sits there.
With Java 6 update 43 or earlier installed, it will run an applet that tells you that Java is installed.
It's so easy to test, can't the developers do it?
Hi dbdan22,
Thanks for the update.
We tested it on the latest Norton Family and it was not reproducible anymore before we released the latest version. We will check into this.
Thanks,
Katie
I've been able to reproduce it on several PC's.
So? Any news? Or is it going to be another few months before we hear anything?
dbdan22,
We are checking into the issue now. I'll update the thread as soon as I get any news.
Thanks,
Katie
I spent three hours this morning trying to figure out why Java wasn't working on my Windows 7 machine. I finally stumbled on a post that suggested Norton Family was the culprit. Sure enough, I uninstalled Norton Family and Java worked fine. I reinstalled the latest agent, and the behavior is the same. Java 7 will not work when Norton Family is installed. My account is unmonitored, and it STILL won't work.
Software engineering at its finest.
Welcome aboard.
In the meantime you can go Here and download Java 6 build 43. But be sure to download the Offline version (the one that's 16 MB), because the Online version will attempt to install Java 7, and you'll be back where you started.
Well, Katie, yet another week has come and gone.
Would you mind updating us about the status of the Java fix?
Thanks so much.
Hi dbdan22,
Thanks for the inquiry. I've checked with the team on the status of the issue. They are working on the compatibility issue now. As soon as I get any updates, I will post them right away.
Thanks for your patience,
Katie
The May 16th update seems to let Java 7 run.
So I downloaded from the website to see..and java still doesnt work
does it not install the latest update when you download fresh?
