Why won't my Norton Internet Security icon on my desktop open?

I have a HP Pavilion 15 Sleekbook and I just had to recover my laptop to get back to Windows 8.1 and everything is working back to normal, except tonight when i had a few updates to install. I did the usual and clicked on "Update & Restart", it came back on normally, but when i went to my desktop I saw that I had a important message saying that the status of my Norton Internet Security and Windows Defender is off. I've tried turning them both back on abd they both configure for a bit but the status doesn't change. I'm pretty sure I need both of these to be turned back on quickly before, my luck,  I get a horrible virus on my laptop. Also, I got a email this morning saying that I have 3 days to renew my warranty for Norton Internet Security. Could this be the cause of it being turned off?

Hang on for some serious advice here since <<  Also, I got a email this morning saying that I have 3 days to renew my warranty for Norton Internet Security.  >> sounds suspicious to me when you say you got a virus already.

Can you give more of the exact text you got in the email -- did it actually say "warranty" or did it refer to "subscription" ?

I just checked the specs of one of the HP Sleekbooks and it says:

Software included
  • McAfee LiveSafe™ 30-day trial offer (Internet access required. First 30 days included. Subscription is required for live updates afterwards).

So prior to installing NIS you need to uninstall McAfee and use a special tool. See the detailed instructions here:

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331&lc=1033&pf=1

So subject to any other advice you may get, and more information about the virus you say you have, you need to do that and then I suggest run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool which will uninstall Norton, clean up and then download the current version of your Norton product, already activated.

I would also add that I don't think you can havae NIS and Windows Defender on at the same time .... but I may be out of date on that.

In addition to Hugh's advice, Windows Defender is disabled by Norton. You should not try to turn it back on while you have NIS installed.

Peter,

I don't have nor could I find quickly a current link to download Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool

Could you please add that ...

Norton Removal and Reinstall tool can be found at

www.norton.com/nrnr

Thanks Peter ....

Hi SioCole,

Did you link your NIS with Norton account online?

Could you see NIS icon in tray icon area. (If yes does it have a red cross or a green tick on it)

What do you mean by 'Everything working back to normal'? Was it restored to Factory image or any custom backup?

   Keep us posted.
