Yeah, I’m using Vista Business 64-bit.
mrsmithers,
We have seen this in very rare cases, unfortunately have not been able to reproduce it in-house. We have narrowed it down to Vista and it's just an artifact of the "toasters", the little dialogs that show up on the bottom right of the screen.
If you move your mouse over the area it should just disappear.
If you would like we can take this offline and I can see if we can determine what is different with your setup. Send me a private message with your email address and I'll see what we can do.

Hi
As a competitor has decided to block users on a version of their software that is not the latest release (i.e. v3 cf. v2) from obtaining virus definition updates and as I am not open to such "blackmail" or forced marketing, I decided to remove and replace with Norton 360. The laptop is an Acer and running Vista Home Premium SP1. I had some weird experiences arising post installation.
However, I wanted to let you know that I also got the yellow icon, at top left. To the left of the yellow circle was another artifact or rather that icon was on its own background. Mrsmithers icon seems to have an artifact to the right whereas mine was more distinct and to left.
Mouse over had no affect. The icon/artifact could not be resolved by selecting another desktop background but did go on reboot and has not yet returned.
I am also having the same issue with this wierd icon on the top left corner. I am really curious what this icon means. Can anyone explain this?
It doesn't "mean" anything, it's a bug in the program where when we create the "toasters". Toasters are the little windows that show up some times when items are being processed etc... Sometimes when we create them, they are not hidden properly and you see what you are seeing, we have not been able to reproduce this behavior in house but have been trying to understand from the few that have seen it what is common amongst those systems.

[Mod Note: Matt made a follow up post later in the thread. Click Here.]
I'd like to chime in and report I see the same thing from time to time.
Vista Home Premium SP1
Barry,
Is there any pattern as to when you see it? Is it always after a reboot? After new virus defs are downloaded?
Any hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt
Yes.. I know for a fact thaat is shows up on a boot / reboot. However it does not happen at EVERY boot. In my case, hovering over it or clicking on it does not make it go away. It goes away by itself after some time. I do not know how much time but not very long. Maybe 30 seconds to a minute.
My computer is pretty busy sometimes after a boot which I have yet to figure out. Meaning after the computer boots and the GUI is up, the HD is very active. During this time the computer is much slower when launching programs as something is busy looking at the HD.
Like I said, I don't know what it is doing. Logs do not reflect a system restore checkpoint or scan. I believe when the computer is active in this way, this is when the icon shows up.
I'll pay more attention and see if I can give better information.
If you don't leave your machine on at all times, our design of trying to do things when your machine is idle breaks down. Basically if we don't have a chance to do our work like "live updates", "virus scans", "backups" etc..., then we will have to do some of these during times that you are actually on the machine.
This may explain what happens when you boot your machine.

Well I’ve been hiding for a bit since I couldn’t reproduce the phenomena. Now suddenly I saw it again. This time the same icon were there but it had an addition to it. I didn’t get a screenshot of it but it looked like a small mechanical arm attached to the icon (ie not looking like the one I have a screen shot). I moved my mouse over it and suddenly there were some kind of message box with a checkbox in the middle. Though it just flashed so I didn’t have time to read it at all. I can’t really tell why it showed now. The only thing It might be was that I rebooted the computer this morning due to a new (graphics) driver update. This behaviour wasn’t as the one I have a screenshot over so it might be another one (diffrent perhaps).
Managed to drag it out…when you click a few times it says " don’t notify about this issue again" but when you select that it just comes back on reboot…doesnt seem harmful tho.
I've been getting the same thing, as described by the previous poster.
Found this thread by googling "little norton icon in upper left corner"
Hi.
After installing Norton 360 2.0 theres a small norton logo icon with an arrow attached to it in the upper far left corner. Tried to ask a technician about it but when we connected to a remote session it dissapeared. I cant move it nor select it, and thus quite irritating .
What is this and how do I move/turn this off. I attached a link with an image showing how it looks like.
I assume that you guys saw this (click here) post by Matt Boucher earlier in the thread…
Yes…but is there a way to hide them… through LU??
There is no way to "hide" them, these are not supposed to be shown the way they are, this is a problem with the toaster part of the program. We are looking into ways to reproduce the problem and working on solutions for it.
If you have a way to consistently reproduce the issue, we would like to hear from you.
Thanks,
Matt
At first, I’ve seen the icon many times, last time was couple hours ago. At this time I managed to click it open and it opened a window saying “Älä avaa tätä uudelleen” (in Finnish) witch is “Don’t open this again” in English. The icon seems to show up after live updatinig virus defenitions “by living date” (I don’t know if that’s a right description, because English is not my mother language). Anyway, it means, that automatic antivirus scan is pending to scan after the machine is in idle state.
Hi, I'm running Vista and am having exactly the same issues as those explained above, which have started since my original 360 updated to 360 v2.
I also get the weird icon at the top left corner with the "don't notify about this issue again" fly out text when I hover over it. I haven't been getting any standard 'toasters' at the bottom right corner which suggests to me that 360 is trying to give me an error message that I'm not receiving.
Part of the reason I think that is because my PC is also VERY slow to boot up, where before it wasn't.The 360 icon in the bottom right takes ages to come up, and sometimes doesn't at all until I manually open the program. I've also had a few instances where, when 360 does fire up, it immediately gives me a red X message that my machine isn't protected, at which point I have to manually turn it on. Bit concerning.
Basically it seems all is not quite right with the new v2 update on my laptop. I haven't had any 360 issues up to this update, but the slow boot time (>5 mins) is beginning to annoy me!
I have this same issue and even have it on a second computer, hopefully some of this info will help:
Computer 1:
Desktop
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
AMD Dual Core Processor
ATI Radeon G-Card
Desktop resolution is set to the maximum level (1280x1024)
HP Motherboard
Computer 2:
Laptop
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
AMD Dual Core Processor
ATI Radeon G-Card
Desktop resolution is set to the maximum level (1280x800)
HP Motherboard
I have the following automatic tasks set up:
Browser Settings Check (Desktop)
Network Address Check (Both)
Internet Explorer Temporary Files (Both)
Windows Temporary Files (Both)
Disk Optimization (Both)
Registry Cleanup (Both)
Automatic Backup (Desktop)
The icons appear at completely random times. I used to believe that they would show up after I let my system idle for a bit but I have seen them appear even while I was surfing the web with firefox. They usually do not occur immediately after a restart, often times quite a bit later. There is a small 'dot' in the center of them (the interior of the window) that when I put my mouse point over it replaces the icon with a regular sized "notifier window" that only shows a checkbox and the "do not warn me about this issue again" message. If I click the checkbox, the icon/popup will close but it will eventually show up again later.
