For the last 3 days I have not connected to internet at home, however, I discover that NIS2011 does not notified me that my system is unsecure.
In 2010, NIS in the system tray icon will turn RED (when I connect to internet), since I have not done any liveupdates. I click on FIX IT on main manual of NIS2010.....normally even after 48 hours NIS2010 will prompt me.
However, NIS2011 did not prompt me with a RED icon.
as soon as i disabled email scan in 2011 it told me it was insecure . there will be a red ! point on the icon in the taskbar and where the networkmap is it wil lsay fix now. so im guessing your problem is not normal
Welcome to the Norton Community. What is your exact version of NIS 2011 from Support > About? What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?
Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS? You indicated having NIS 2010 before this. How did you upgrade to NIS 2011? DId you do so through the Norton Update Center? How long have you had NIS 2011 installed?
Did you ever have NIS 2011 BETA installed on your computer?
Also, check that your computer time and date are set correctly.
Please let us know the answer to these questions which will allow us to help get this working properly for you.

Dear Allen,
My OS is WinXP SP3 (32bits). My NIS2011 is 18.1.0.37. I updated to NIS2011 from 2010 Tues with update centre in 2010. I made the update on 31 Aug. That was before I went for my business trip leaving my Computer at home untouch.
I have Malware bytes and NIS2011 only. No Betas. Time in my PC is correct.
Thanks very much for the update. Do you have the free or paid version of MalwareBytes? The free version is OK to run alongside NIS since it is an on-demand scanner only. However if you have the paid version it could cause conflicts with NIS since both have real-time compnents.
Also what happens when you run Live Update? Did the red X go away and now indicate Secure status in the main NIS window?

I have free version....there was no RED icon in my system tray. When I saw that NIS2011 icon on system tray is normal, I thought it was funny, because when I do not use NIS2010 for 1 or 2 days, I get a RED icon, but not for NIS2011.
When I log on, I check on the main manual of NIS2011, livedated was has no update for 3 days....but there is no sign of Red icon on System tray or main manual.
In 2010, the FIX IT big red button will show and Icon in system tray is red.
Thanks for the clarification. How long did you wait to see if the red X would show up? It may take a bit of time for NIS to communicate with the Symantec servers and update the status accordingly.
Also, please check in Computer Settings that both Live Update and Pulse Updates are set to ON. You will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see these two settings.
I'll do a bit more research on this when I get home from work tonight. It may be that there have been changes in this area as some low risk things have been modified to not give you an at risk warning. This one is pretty minor (provided that Live and Pulse updates are turned on) since soon after having an internet connection it should download live updates again.
I'll let you know what I find. In the meantime, please run Live Update manually if you haven't already.
Norton doesn't connect to servers, to define it's status. When you turn off something, or when it's outdated, it changes some data (probably a registry key) and immediately changes it's status to red or yellow. If it's green, you don't have to worry.
In NIS 2011 Norton Security History logs LiveUpdate sessions so you can look and see if you have been receiving updates that you just are not aware of. In the history window click the Show dropdown list and scroll all the way to the bottom to find the LiveUpdate logs.
