Will not back up to external hard drive

I bought an iomega eGo BlackBelt portable hard drive (500gb) to backup my files. I have a Gateway laptop with an Intel Core2 Duo CPU 2GHz processor with 4GB RAM, 144GB of memory, a 32-bit operating system. My  Norton 360 (version 5.1.0.29) successfully backed up to the portable hard drive once, but now won't do so a second time. I erased everything from the drive and tried again, but still get the same message: "There is a backup problem. Make sure the destination drive or device is connected and then try again." I can transfer files back and forth from it. I can create folders. I can play my media. Why won't Norton recognize it to do the backup? I checked to make sure the settings are sending to the correct drive (Iomega_HDD).

That sounds interesting -- that something has caused the backup utility to lose its place. And your remedy would fit in with an workaround that I've seen suggested when trying to recover backups from a discontinued installation -- that one had to force the Norton backup to start to create a backup so that it recorded the default backup location; then one could copy the backed up files into that location and it would recover them.

Given that N 360 has a Registry Cleaner I'd not be surprised if it had cleaned out the location information from the registry ..... I despise Registry CLeaners ! <g>

As a follow-up, I checked the backup and everything looks good. My method of false starting the back to the online area seems to have worked. What's better is that on manually requesting another backup, Norton again seems to be finding my external drive so maybe I am the problems.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm glad that worked for you.

These things are sent to try us ....
