Will the Metro Browser Be Supported Eventually?

Will the Windows 8 Metro browser eventually be supported in Norton Online Family? Will this be happening soon? Until it has support for the Metro browser, NoF is unsuitable for Windows 8 computers.

In the NoF system requirements, does the term "Metro browser" refer only to Internet Explorer 10, or does it include the Metro versions of other browsers as well?

Hi Bulldoggy,

I'll check with the team for the question and get back to you.

Thanks,

Katie

Bulldoggy,

Norton Family does support Metro browser for web filtering.  We're actively looking into expanding the other family safety features in Metro mode.

Norton Family works well if you go to the desktop (traditional windows desktop) mode in Windows 8.

Thanks

Katie

Thanks for your reply.

I realize that the Modern/Metro interface poses challanges to developers. Nevertheless, if the Modern/Metro browser cannot be filtered, that's a gigantic hole in NoF.

Hi Bulldoggy

It's nice to meet you. I'm the product manager for Norton Family and I saw your post regarding the Metro Browser.

As Kaite mentioned, Norton Family does filter and monitor web activity while the child's using the Metro Browser for Wndows 8 desktops. For filtering, are you asking for search filtering or some ither type of filtering? I'd like to better understand the feedback.

Thanks,

Yvonne

Kaite didn't answer my question about what exactly is the meaning of the term "Metro browser".

I need to know whether all the features of Norton Family and Norton Family Premier described here are available in Windows 8 whether one uses the desktop interface or the Modern (also known as the Metro) interface.

According to this web page, Norton Family for Windows 8 "does not support Metro browser". However, the web page doesn't say:

  1. What exactly is the "Metro browser"? Does that mean only the Modern (also known as the Metro) version of Internet Explorer 10 or does it also mean the Modern/Metro versions of all web browsers?
  2. What exactly is meant by "does not support..."? Does it mean that not a single feature of Norton Family and Norton Family Premier is supported? Or does it mean that some features are supported and some are not, and if so, which features specifically are not supported?

Hi Bulldoggy,

Thanks for the feedback on our system requirements. For our next release, we will revise the system requirements to make it easier to understand what features are supported by OS and browser.

To answer your questions:

What exactly is the "Metro browser"? Does that mean only the Modern (also known as the Metro) version of Internet Explorer 10 or does it also mean the Modern/Metro versions of all web browsers?

"Metro browser" is the Internet Explorer browser that is launched from the Start screen. Norton Family can filter web sites and monitor web traffic when the child is surfing with the IE browser tied to the Start screen.

What exactly is meant by "does not support..."? Does it mean that not a single feature of Norton Family and Norton Family Premier is supported? Or does it mean that some features are supported and some are not, and if so, which features specifically are not supported?

Norton Family's search supervision, time supervision, social network monitoring and video monitoring (a Norton Family Premier feature) are not supported when the child are using apps launched from the Start screen.   If the child goes switches to "The desktop", Norton Family's web supervision, search supervision, time supervision, social network monitoring and video monitoring (a Norton Family Premier feature) are supported.

Please let us know if there are any additonal questions or comments.

Thanks

Yvonne

Thank you very much for your helpful reply.

From your reply it is evident that, for now, Norton Family is unsuitable for Windows 8, and since my son's computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed I will not be using Norton Family. I am confident that the developers will eventually create full support for the Start Screen. When that happens I look forward to installing Norton Family on my son's computer.

The fact that Norton Family is fully supported on the Windows 8 desktop is of no help. To put it another way, there is no point to locking 9 of your home's 10 doors.

Well, despite what I said above, I installed Norton Family anyway.

Even with its limitations in Windows 8 - which are shared by many other parental control applications - Norton Family is still well thought-out and well done.
