Beware of this update!
The first release of this update for Windows 7 seems to have been April of 2014. It's purpose was stated by Microsoft this way:
"This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program... (to) help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed."
It appears from Microsoft's website that this update has new material. The files that will be installed all have either March or April 2016 dates. And here's what I ran into:
I received notice of this update on 12 April, and installed it on 13 April. It was the only update I installed. When I rebooted the computer, my Norton toolbar's Identity Safe box said 'Access Vault', not 'Vault is closed' as it does normally. So, when I tried the button to 'Access Vault', a message came up 'Restart needed'. I had just restarted! I restarted again - and got the same results. No matter what I tried, I could not get Identity Safe to work under Windows 7. I checked memory using Task Manager, and a module named 'Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser' was active in memory.
Norton's Identity Safe does not work with the Edge browser in Windows 10. I wondered if this Microsoft update may have disabled Identity Safe in Windows 7, so I backed the update out and re-booted. As if by magic, Identity Safe worked again!
I do not believe in coincidences when it comes to Microsoft. Norton should contact Microsoft and discuss this with them.
