Win7 Home computer freezing after Norton Internet Security install

Troubleshooting an issue with my mother's computer (Dell latitude 570 running Windows 7 Home).  It's been freezing up on her - a problem which seemed to start after installing Norton. She ran Start Up repair which seemed to remove all or part of Norton (I wasn't there for this...only saw the results). I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton and was able to boot up once before we started having trouble again. Getting error log message about "system not shutting down cleanly". Also saw message about drivers (which seem to be Norton/symantec drivers) not loading.

At one point, we couldn't even boot up at all or would get to the Windows logo screen, freeze and see little patches of blue pixelation on parts of the display.

I eventually booted back up, uninstalled Norton and things were fine for a good stretch. I decided to try installing Norton once again but did the 2012 download straight from the site (vs. 2011 which we had on back-up disk). Seemed ok at first and not having as many problems but the computer did freeze again at one point - on her desktop screen - with those same patches of pixelated blue.

She's not running any other antivirus or malware programs on this machine...in fact, there's very little installed on here. Uses IE9, Windows Live Mail, Word and that's about it.

Has anyone else run into this issue - freezing, blue patches on screen display - after install?Any chance there's some kind of incompatability here?

Would love any troubleshooting advice.
