SoulAsylum:

... I also haven't see anyone reporting it as well....

Hi SoulAsylum:

I had no problem installing KB5031356 on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop, but there are a few users posting in the AskWoody forum who are reporting errors when trying to install this Quality Update.  I'm still not sure what system configuration will cause the installation of KB5031356 to fail but see Microfix's post # 2594277 today in Susan Bradley's October updates – here comes Copilot about Reserved Storage as well as their follow-up post # 2594279 about UEFI vs legacy MBR.

Yes indeed, read the articles on that. Thanks for the post. None of my W10 devices experienced the said issue, I have different hardware and different configurations across them all. I also haven't see anyone reporting it as well. Ask-Woody has good information, personally, I've always taken them to be a bit over the top paranoid with updates. Much alike the lameness of Enterprise IT in getting their systems patched. The benefits of patching far out weight not doing so in most cases. The error annotated appears to date to be an isolated one in that regard.

Win 10 users seeing errors when they try to install KB5031356 should read the 14-Oct-2023 Neowin article If the Windows 10 Patch Tuesday update (KB5031356) fails to install, here's what to do.

The Known Issues section of the release notes for KB5031356 was recently revised to note that "This update might not be installed successfully. Devices might initially display progress, but then not finish the installation. A common error code encountered with this issue is Error 8007000D (ERROR_INVALID_DATA)...This issue is resolved by using Known Issue Rollback (KIR)."  A workaround to enter the command Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth in an elevated command prompt is included in those release notes.

Kudos to users for posting about this possible update failure in the AskWoody thread October updates – here comes Copilot.
