Windows 10 Pro: flatlaf-windows-x86_64.dll

Has anyone seen this appear in the user/temp directory before, Windows 10 Pro? Found this when doing my daily system temp file cleaning on my daily duster. Nothing in Norton history as far as detections, BUT, this is an expired certificate for a valid ( supposedly ) Windows dll. How in the world the OS nor Norton did not disallow this from getting onto the OS is beyond reproach. This is dangerous to say the least. Feedback is a must please.

***This still doesn’t tell me WHERE this came from, and what its used for other than Windows “decorations” ( supposedly ).

AI Overview : .

Theflatlaf-windows-x86_64.dll file is a native Windows dynamic-link library used by the FlatLaf Look and Feel for Java Swing applications. Its primary function is to enable native window decorations on 64-bit Windows systems, which provides a modern, integrated appearance with features not possible with pure Java.

Key Uses and Functionality

  • Custom Window Decorations: It allows FlatLaf to provide its own custom title bar and window border, replacing the default operating system ones. This gives developers full control over colors and allows for a dark-mode title bar on Windows.
  • Native Integration: The DLL enables native Windows features for the custom window, such as:
    • Window resizing functionality.
    • Operating system animations and snapping functionality (e.g., dragging a window to the edge of the screen to maximize or snap it).
    • Native Windows 10/11 drop shadows.
    • Invocation of the standard Windows system window menu when right-clicking the title bar.
  • “Full Window Content” Mode: It supports extending the application’s content into the window title bar area, using nearly the whole window for the application content.
  • Performance: Using native libraries for such functions can offer better integration and performance than a pure Java implementation.

Technical Details

  • The flatlaf.jar file includes this DLL within its package.
  • When a Java application using FlatLaf is run on a compatible Windows system, the library automatically extracts the DLL to a temporary directory and loads it to enable these features.
  • This extraction process is necessary to load native code but may occasionally trigger security warnings in overly sensitive security software, although the DLL itself is safe to use.
  • Developers can also choose to distribute the native libraries with their application in a specific directory to avoid extraction to a temporary folder at runtime.

FlatLaf is an open-source, cross-platform Look and Feel designed to modernize Java Swing applications with a clean, simple, and elegant flat design aesthetic. More details can be found on the FlatLaf website.

Ran MBAM for a second opinion, it found the below. Finding it hard to digest that I had a trojan for a printer that I use on my network (shared) and its isolated. Not certain that this is the issue posted above but. Either way. Norton isn’t doing its job. Not even!!

Hi SoulAsylum:

My Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop is enrolled in the ESU program and I have an Epson XP-7100 printer. I can’t find anything related to FlatLaf on my system.

I looked in my in C:\Users\<myusername>\AppData\Local\Temp folder (last purged 08-Jan-2026) with both File Explorer and TreeSize Free and couldn’t find any files or subfolders associated with FlatLaf. A search of my entire C:\Windows folder for *flatlaf* did not find flatlaf-windows-x86_64.dll or any other FlatLaf-related file.

I have Malwarebytes Standard (previously known as Malwarebytes Premium) running in real-time protection mode and it has never detected a Trojan.Loader threat.

I’ll check again later this week before my next disk cleanup with HDCleaner and will let you know if anything associated with FlatLaf shows up in one of my temp folders.

Thanks for the post and info. I have the notion this was a false positive on the part of MBAM. Those are far and few between though. One thing I noted that ISN’T printer related is Adobe Acrobat is trying to update several times a day. I have its services disable in Windows services and blocked under the Norton 360 firewall. Yet is has continued to force an update bypassing the Norton firewall in its entirety. Its not making sense.

There are also zero Java Swing apps on this system that this software is written for. Its also Oracle related and its looking for an ARM CPU has my spidy eye wide open. Oracle is known to be a pathway for hacks into Corporate systems. I also do NOT do any dev work on this or any of my systems.
