Windows 8 and Windows 8.1Quick start-up issue with NIS

Some time ago I posted at Norton Community to ask about a problem of NIS in where the on-demand scan feature will not work sometime.

You can read the full story here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Manual-Virus-Scan-will-not-run-old-problem/m-p/1109776#M255450

The solution provided by the community was that I need to disable the "Quick Start-Up" of Windows 8 / 8.1 to make sure that the drivers can be loaded during start-up. It's then clear that quick start-up is causing issue with Norton.

The reason I posted here again is to make sure someone from Norton has acknowledge this problem and is now working for a fix to be release in the next update. Before this, there was a representative from Norton, who known as Vineeth responded to my question on Microsoft Community (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-performance/quick-start-up-is-causing-some-issues-to-windows/1fded6a2-dcd3-40be-a558-512a534cb498)

So, can anyone here from Norton assure me that that is a fix and they are working on it or is it only me who is facing this problem?

Thank you.

Tan.

Hi tancheeping,

I used W8/8.1 until 1,5 months ago+/- and I had never encountered the problem you described.
Normally you should not need to disable the fast-boot to run any scan. I was on the previous version of NIS 20.2 and I could not tell if I would have got the same issue with that version.

NIS is now upgrading to version 21.3.0.12, so I suggest you wait to see if you will continue to have that issue even with the latter.

Regards,
Sandro

I'm now using the very latest version of NIS and I also have installed all the latest updates from Microsoft as well, but still, this problem has been bothering me for nearly a year... I hope someone from Norton can take a good look on this.

@ tancheeping,

I'm sorry that NIS 21.3.0.12 didn't solve your problem. When I was writing the last post, what this version would have had to solve was unknown by the users, since the Announcement had not yet been posted:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Product-Update-Announcements/Product-Update-21-3-of-Norton-Internet-Security-and-Norton/ba-p/1134570

Mine was just a suggestion. However, even though you've got other things that the update has solved.

The fact of having to disable the boot, it's just a workaround to get the scans to work.

I'll be happy to learn when this problem will be issued by Symantec.

Cheers!

It's okay, you need not to apologise, you just want to help the comunity members. Anyway, if you can read here: it's actually causing more than 1 problem,

Hi, tancheeping.

I'm confused, do you mean your problem has returned even with Fast Startup turned off?

Hi, Sandro_cm.

Below are a couple more instances of this problem rearing its head this year (if you have the time to read through both threads), including one that involved my computer (Windows 8.1). You'll notice that none of these "symptoms" look the same on the surface, both the ones in this post and those in tancheeping's posts. Yet, they are all caused by one and the same problem: Window's Fast Startup. Once that is turned off, these symptoms vanish.

Hello

I believe this issue has been brought to the attention of Norton/Symantec.

Sorry for creating confusion here.

"this problem has been bothering me for nearly a year": what I'm saying here is that it took me almost a year to learn the true cause of this issue.

My NIS is now working perfectly with quick start-up disable.

Thank you.

Okay.  Thank you for letting us know, floplot. :smileyhappy:

I certainly hope so.

Thanks.

Okay.  I see. :smileyhappy:

Thanks for the link you posted, I reread it and now, I had seen it previously.
I would also add that W8 has also created other problems for me in the past such as the many services ccSvcHst (up to 9) running simultaneously until the fast-boot was enabled. The only way to fix it was to restart the computer or disable the fast-boot.
I could not comment on what was done wrong even by Microsoft!

I agree Inquirer, however, somehow you've got a solution, I would like to say a workaround to solve problems.
IMHO, they will go away when Windows 9 will be released next year, at least that is the hope of all.  :smileywink:

Sandro

Yes I also have been having issues (and still do) with this problem, I did stumble on a way to re start the scans, but it's a bit of a work up, and agree it's not an ideal work around, But it does work and you don't have to swich off the quick start.

Hi, Sandro.

I've got Guru DaveH to thank for that, as it was he who suggested that I turn off Fast Startup when I reported that N360 was going bonkers on my Windows 8 machine.  And you're right, it's more of a workaround than a solution, but the effects are permanent as long as you don't re-enable that feature.

Yes, hopefully.  But I'm afraid that those of us with Windows 8 will probably be stuck with this problem. :smileylol: Norton products aren't the only ones that conflict with Fast Startup, you know.

Hi, CR41.

I read your post in that other thread.  Oh my God! :smileysurprised:  I must say that it's beyond "not ideal" as a workaround.  Sorry, but I'd sooner use Windows 95 than have to go through that every now and then on Windows 8/8.1. :smileylol:  Far better to have Quick/Fast Startup turned off, in my opinion :smileyhappy:

[Edit: I just realized that I had already read that post of yours a day or two ago.]

Then may I suggest that you live with the problem :smileyindifferent:

Hi, CR41.

To each his/her own. :smileyhappy:
