Windows 8 IE10 and NIS identy protection add in causing slow page loads

I have found that IE10 is really slow loading pages.  Chrome was not having the issue.  I started turning on/off add-ins and found it was Identity protection.  A neat thing in IE10 it shows how long add-ins take to load and navigate.  NID showed 7.43 seconds in the navigation column.

Anyone know what may be going on or what to look for to try and fix?

Yes 64bit.  New Laptop and I have not done anything to it.  I am running the IE desktop (not metro - braindead - version).

Just wanted to fill in the background ....

I'll let someone else help you on the question of slow page loads.

One standard troubleshooting techniques is to disable all add-ons in the IE / Tools / Manage Add-ons and if that speeds things up then do the usual 50/50 technique for renabling until you find which specific one is slowing things down.

But what security application came preinstalled on it when you got it? Most have a trial of something, often but not always Norton and these need to be uninstalled and then cleaned up with a special tool you can download from the website of the application.

We can point you to this if you tell us what was preinstalled. If it was NIS then are you using the original trial or have you updated it or reinstalled it? Can you check the Version ID -- Support / About where it is in the format nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

Laptop only came with NIS and that is all that is running, I have automatic updating turnd on.  The version is 20.2.0.19

The way I isolated this issue was turning each and every add-in off until I found this module to be the culprit.  Once I turned it off, pages were much faster loading...turn it back on and they get sluggish again.

may be you sould try  re moveing  norton then reinstall  wish wish would all so give you a clean copy  of NIS

here is norton removal tool http://www.symantec.com/nrt/    some in worth trying

granto,

In your original post I assumed that << NID showed 7.43 seconds in the navigation column. >> was a typo for NIS. Was that the case?

I'm not in IE10 at the moment so I can't see how that timing function works. If it's shown as NIS then it might be any element but my IE 9 shows three toolbar subunits and I only de-activate the Toolbar itself partly because I don't use the Identity Safe and partly to gain the real estate.

That way I get the SafeWeb check mark on search results......

No, the 7.43 was correct, very high considering everything else was sub 1 second.  And if I just turned off the NID portion, the pages loaded normally.

My desktop is on old ie8 and the latest 360 version, and it is running just fine.  So I am guessing it is an IE10/Win8 introduced issue.

Sorry but I'm just not seeing it --

<< And if I just turned off the NID portion,  >

What do you mean by NID portion ?

Just came across this Microsoft FixIt automated troubleshooter for IE including slow startup

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_freezes_or_crashes/

I ran it (I appreciate that it has a list and let me decide mode) but it did not find anything wrong with mine which is set up as shown in that image ...... and still is after the fixit.

I just enabled the Norton Toolbar shown in that screenshot as disabled and ran the MS FixIt again and it did not suggest disabling anything to do with Norton and the total of all 3 elements was less than 1 second,

So can you explain what the NID is that took 7+ secs to load and that you disabled?

Sorry, meant to say NIP = Norton Identity Protection, one of the 3 add-ins.  I will try the patch and let you know.

Thanks.

Aaah!

Have you tried just running the two, as I do, without the toolbar? When you disable the toolbar a screen should pop up with one box prechecked asking if you want to disable that also -- uncheck it and then Ok your way out.

Yes, but I don't get any of the toolbar items, but the pages do load instantly with it off.  Also, I am probably one of only a handfull of peple in the world using identity safe, but I am used to it and would not be able to function without it (small brain syndrome).

OK -- I can't help you actually debug it but there's a lot more background now so I'll ask someone to help.

I don't remember how but you can in fact access the Identity Safe without having the Toolbar installed so that's a possible workaround.

I'll ask for help on this.

You can access ID Safe via the User Interface as follows:

ID Safe Login -UI.PNG

Once logged in you'll see more Options:

After login to ID Safe.PNG

Hope this is what yu were looking for!

Thanks for that bit.

Can you help OP pin down anything that can be changed with the Toolbar assembly that deals with slow page loading?

Actually I do not use Win 8 nor IE 10, but asked a question of Senthill in regards to another post they made and got that info via a PM - so although I could provide the above valid info - I am not well enough versed in IE 10 nor Win 8 to assist with the slowness - sorry!

IE 9 shows the time for loading as 0.00. I would suspect that the 7 + seconds noted by the OP is a teething pain between Win 8 (IE10) and Norton 2013.

You should try to get a fresh installation of NIS on your system to see if there is something wrong with your current install.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here   www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

Let us know if this helps.

Help appreciated nevertheless.

Peanut gallery here;

I'm in W8x64 with IE10 running and the Norton add-ons only detract by 0.17 sec according to the screen that I just looked at when it asked if I wanted to disable anything.

The uninstall/reinstall may not be a bad idea but I'd use the NRnRT

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20110217171332EN

to get a clean copy and then run live update until the program tessl me that all updates have been downloaded and installed.

Keep us posted
