Can someone advise me on this Issue.

You can easily ignore this alert from Norton Protection Center. Click on “Windows Automatic Update” and click “Ignore”.

Correct.

I agree

I am well aware that you can Ignore certain things on the Norton Protection Center.

However, do not want to "Ignore" it; I want this problem Fixed which is why I wrote in here to try and get this Issue Resolved.

Hi Floating_Red,

I just want to be sure I have your steps listed correctly. As I understand it:

1) You installed Norton Internet Security on your system (which version? Did you upgrade your 2007 version to 2008? Which Operating System are you using? I can assume from your post HERE that it's most likely Windows XP sp3 or Windows Vista sp1)

2) You installed Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition 2008 trialware on your system (Which components did you install? Did you exclude Norton AntiVirus, so Norton Internet Security would not be removed? Please provide as much detail as possible)

3) You Checked the "Disable Windows Automatic Update" and rebooted. (Was this an NSW install option, something within NIS, or something you did through the Windows Security Center? If it is through the Norton products, please be as detailed as possible with the messages you receive and the text of the options you receive.)

4)  After reboot, NIS then had a Red Cross and it displayed, in the Norton Protection Center, that the W.A.U. was At Risk. You then un-Checked the "Disable Windows Automatic Update" and again re-started the computer (same questions as #3)

5)  it still showed that the W.A.U. was At Risk still - even though the Automatic Update, from the Control Panel, was On. (which exact setting is your Windows Automatic Update set to? Automatic? In NIS, if you click on the Windows )

I'm a bit confused by these steps also. You say that you disabled automatic updates, but then when you reboot, the Protection Center correctly identifies that the automatic updates are "at risk" by being disabled, but then you say that the Windows Automatic Updates are turned on. I apologize if I'm misunderstanding the problem; please let me know.

Hello Tony,

       01. I have had N.I.S. 2008 Installed since September 28, 2007, and I Updgarded from N.I.S. 2007.  On Friday, May 30, 2008, I Installed the Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition Trailware.  I am using S.P. 3.

02. Norton SystemWorks did Install Auto-Protect but it is Off and so I am only using N.I.S. Auto-Protect.

03. It was the Norton SystemWorks Option.  Every time I now start-up my system, it say that I have "turned off Windows Automatic Update.  You can manually download updates from the Web Site".  I will Update this next time I Turn On my system.

04. Yes; it still shows the Red X in the Task Bar.

05. The Automatic Update is set to Automatic (recommended); Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them: Every Day.

After I re-booted the first time, I then un-Checked the Disable Windows Automatic Updates and again re-Started my computer.  When it re-Started, the Red X was still in the Task Bar "X Norton" and Windows Automatic Update was At Risk.  Also, the FIX NOW button is missing that normally would come up if something is at Attention or At Risk that normally appers just below the Secuirty Status.

Is any one going to get back to me on this Issue?

I’m sure Tony will be back when he’s caught up after the weekend.

I thought that he would be busy because of the weekend and I hope he does.

I suspect he’s on his way here since I see a flood of messages from him in the other Boards here …

Yeah, I noticed that.

All I can do is wait, and wait, and wait.

Hi Floating_Red,

I apologize; I'm still a bit unclear on a few things. Is it safe to assume that you completed the following steps regarding your NIS 2008 product?

Upgrading to Windows XP SP3 with your Norton Product Installed

When you installed Norton SystemWorks Basic Edition 2008, did you install Norton AntiVirus with this product? Which specific components were installed? This is not a recommended setup, having NIS 2008 and NSW 2008 installed on the same system.

You mention that "Every time I now start-up my system, it say that I have "turned off Windows Automatic Update..." When you refer to "It", you mean NSW, correct?

Have you tried opening a chat session through NIS 2008 so the technician can get a better view of your system? How did you contact them before? Again, I'm sorry for the additional questions, I just want to be get a better idea of the nature of the problem. Thanks!

Hi Tony,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I Install the S.P. 3 Update with N.I.S. already Installed three weeks' ago roughly.

Everything was Installed except the Norton BackUp.  Anti-Virus is not working on N.S.W..  I never knew that having N.I.S. and N.S.W. was not recommended Installed on the same systeml; why is that?  Is it because they "fight" with each other...?

No; I get a message from N.I.S. - you know that Norton Notification that appers just above the Task Bar on the bottom right-hand side next to the Clock? - tell me that Windows Automatic has been turned off and that I can Download Updates from the Microsoft Web Site.

I contacted Technical Support and they took control of my system.  They re-started all my symantec Products and then re-started my computer - but still W.A.U. was At Risk.  They also suggested that it was probably S.P. 3 Install causing this.

Everything was working fine until I - stupidly - Checked that Disable WIndows Automatic Update, as I mentioned before in this Post.

Since having Norton SystemWorks 2008 and Norton Internet Security 2008 installed at the same time is not recommended, it would probably be a good idea to use the removal tool to get them both off your system, then reinstall Norton Internet Security (or Norton SystemWorks, if you liked that one better). This information is on the Norton SystemWorks box, but I agree that this information might also be helpful when downloading the trial version as well. Without being able to dig through your system, I can’t really offer much help. As there are a few contributing factors here (NIS and NSW on the same system as well as XPsp3), we may want to elminate a few of them in order to resolve the issue for you. Please let me know your thoughts on this resolution.

Why can I not have both on my system?

"As there are a few contributing factors here (NIS and NSW on the same system as well as XPsp3), we may want to elminate a few of them in order to resolve the issue for you."

"Elminate" what?

I am not really happy with this Resolution because I would rather have them both on my system and I would not rather use the N.R.T..

Why do I need to Run the N.R.T. since it is only W.A.U. that is wrong; the problems did only strt when I Checked the Disable Windows Automatic Update in N.SW.

This Reply is not as detailed as it should be because I lost the one when I Clicked "Submit Post" due to an Error with this Forum as I had left the computer for a while; please sort this out as it is really annoying.

Tony,

Could you get back to me as soon as possible regarding this Issue.

I apologize; you certainly can have both on your system. Because the installation of both products on your system need to be performed a certain way, this setup is not recommended. For example:

If you install Norton Internet Security on your system, then install Norton SystemWorks 2008 with the default settings, the Norton AntiVirus in NSW will uninstall NIS from your system. You will need to perform a custom install to exclude NAV from the install.

This is the reason why I wanted to know exactly how you installed Norton SystemWorks, since that install seems to be the important one. Since I don't have the information on how you installed NSW, and I am unsure which components were installed/not installed, I recomended the remoal tool as a way to get to a clean base to start over. I hope this help. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for getting back to me.

If N.SW un-installed N. A-V from N.I.S., wouldn't the Virus Protection and the like be At Risk in N.I.S.Auto-Protect in N.I.S. seems to be okay as is everything else - except W.A.U. which is still At Risk

Everything in N.SW was installed - except Norton GoBack.

So I could have N.SW on my system if I did not install the Anti-Virus part of it...?

Like I have mentioned before, everything seemed to be working fine until I Checked the Disable Windows Automatic Update

Get back to me as soon as you can.

This seems a bit strange, since the NAV within NSW, when installed with NSW, would remove all of NIS (since the NAV in NIS cannot be installed/uninstalled separately). Again, I would strongly recommend contacting our Customer Support team about this issue. Thanks!
