Does NIS automatically stop the service- Windows Defender?
When I had NAV2008, I had Windows Defender as an on demand scanner
Now when I go in Windows task manager> Services Tab> then click Services Button
it shows the service is stopped
Not that I want it as an anti-spyware/virus tool, But I have rad that ther service needs to be on because other parts of windows need to run with it on
I wonder if that informatio might be dated? I went to the microsoft vista forums and asked if NIS 2010 turns of Windows defender services. A microsoft person says yes, because NIS handles the same functions and defender is not needed
So I wonder if I should just leave Windows Defender as it is:
Not running
start up process manual
any others have thoughts on this?
What does your Vista system show?
I only use it as an on demand spyware checker, but If I have malwarebytes along with NIS 2010, is defender even necessary?
Though in that link Flopot gave, Yogesh says it needs to be running, wondering if this is still true?
You might need to turn it on to perform certain startup tasks. If so, you can start the service then. Otherwise leave it as Norton and Microsoft agree it should be.
Also if you decide to use windows defender, just search for defender and open the program. After that click turn on. Update the defs and scan with it. Afterwards, don’t forget to turn it off though settings–>administrative setting, turn off product. Running two malware protection is bad for the system.
Just wanted to add that I have windows for nearly a year haven’t switch on defender for a month. Its service was not started as well. No problems so defender service doesn’t need to be on.
I won't get into the debate about whether Defender can run alongside NIS without conflict, but it is not necessary and NIS does turn it OFF during installation.
I had this just recently when I had to uninstall NIS 2011 to correct a minor problem with email not getting moved to Antispam folder. When I uninstalled 2011, I got a message that Windows Defender was being turned ON. When I installed 2011 again, Defender got turned OFF.
I've had them running alongside each other for more than two years. No problems, though they are both real-time.
There were only 2 instances in my memory when they both jumped on the same threat, one time I awarded it to NIS, the second time to Defender.
Usually just one of them reacts, mostly it is NIS, but sometimes Defender reacts when NIS doesn't (like in the example I mentioned in the linked thread, FLVPlayer adware).
Perhaps the problem described in your thread might have something to do with having both programs running live now. I'm not saying that it is, but it might be a possibility now. Some of the conficts may not be visible to you now, but may be going on behind the scenes.
well I restarted my computer and Windows Defender is NOT running. And the Start up type is set at Automatic. So I assume it will attempt to run at start up, but then the NIS keeps it from starting
Settings>Control Panel> and click Windows Defender, a pop up says Windows defender is turned off
When I go to
Windows Task Manager, then click Services Tab, then click services button,
Windows Defender Status does NOT show ON, BUT the Start Up Type is Automatic
So I wonder why is is showing as start up type "Automatic", but when I restart the computer it does not turn on (Which I'm glad about, just wondering though)
Windows Defender is not starting because the underlying configuration has it turned off. In fact if you click on Start the service in the Component Services window you will most likely get a message that the service has been started and stopped because the service is not in use or required.
Windows Defender is not needed if you have NIS and it is not needed for other Windows services to function properly.
If you really, really want to turn it on you could go to Start menu > Help & Support and type in Windows Defender in the search box. The results will show how to turn it on but at the least if you do this I would recommend to turn OFF the real-time component in Windows Defender Options.
I would suggest to leave it OFF as NIS purposely turns it off during install. When NIS is uninstalled NIS turns Windows Defender back ON.
Please see the following post by a Symantec employee.
As long as the Windows firewall shows that Norton is doing the job, and the Norton icon is green, the settings are fine. I think we are seeing a "terminology" thing, where it is showing the Windows firewall as started, but does not show that Norton is doing the work. That is why Norton is showing as taking the place of the Windows firewall and Windows Defender in the control panel.
