I want to know one thing…i have installed Norton Internet Security 2009 on my vista os with sp1 and all updates softwares and OS, now my question is why windows defender is not disabled if i have installed NIS 2009. However windows defender icon is not showing in taskbar but when i click on start, programs, windows defender it opens and when i click by going through control pannel, it opens…so if i have NIS installed will this defender would clash with NIS or not???..as i have heard we should not keep more antivirus and spyware in one system…plzzzzz guys tell me the solution!!!

I think I understand part of this. Windows Defender as an active antispyware is off, but certain compenents of the program need to be on, thus showing in start up menu. Am I off base here?
thanks for the solution…
Hi silverhawk,
There is no need to disable the Windows Defender as it provide additional security for your computer along with Norton Internet Security 2009 even though NIS 2009 has the Antispyware component. There are no conflicts in running Windows defender program along with NIS 2009. If you face any such, you can report back to this forum. Windows Defender is an Antispyware program that runs full time when your computer is turned on. It helps to protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive. This program will block many Malware programs before they are downloaded to your computer. When it does this, it does not tell you about it. Been running NIS 2009 (and NIS 2008 previously) alongside Windows Defender simultaneously in real-time mode for close to a year now without any difficulties.
However, the 16.5.0.135 update was just downloaded/installed today less than an hour ago on my system. Upon re-boot, the Defender icon appeared in the system tray stating the app had been turned off. I turned it back on, then re-booted to see what would occur. Once again, the icon re-appeared informing me Defender was turned off.
Apparently with this latest update, users aren't able to run both programs. Anyone else have this situation that had previously been using the apps together without problems?
I just disabled Defender completely from running in the background on start-up. To me, it's really no big deal as I also utilize Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware as stand-alone applications that are run on demand. Would be interested in those who noticed similar behavior upon applying the latest 16.5.0.135 update.
(Edited for clarification)
Actually It is Yogesh whom I learned that while the realtime protection of WD is off, the program as a whole needs to be on for other reasons

I am having the same issue. Windows Defender was turned off after the update to 16.5.0.135 and everytime I turn it on and then restart my computer, the icon and windows screen appear that say that windows defender is off.
Anybody else having this problem and know how to fix it?
NIS 2009 has been working well alongside Defender until update of NIS 16.5.0.135 , since then Defender service starts but then fails. Is this intentional or an accidental side effect of this update? Not very happy as Defender does seem to offer some extra protection.
I am under the impression that one should not have two real time antispyware programs running simultaneously as they can conflict.
I do use windows defender not as real time but on demand scan
