Windows defender question

Just wondering; how does this prog relate to Norton av?  It’s meant to filter downloaded software. But isn’t Norton doing that already? So is it unneccessary, or is it better to keep it running next to Norton?

Windows Defender normally would be turned off by Norton installation.

You can keep Windows Defender turned off and use it on an on-demand basis - as mdturner already said, Norton turns off Windows Defender automatically. This is because running two real-time security programs can actually create conflicts on your computer instead of doubling or improving your security. You can read this thread for more information on Windows Defender and Norton (2009) products.

Windows Defender is a built-in Antispyware program that runs full time when your computer is turned on. It helps to protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it’s detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive. This program will block many Malware programs before they are downloaded to your computer. When it does this, it does not tell you about it. There is no need to disable the Windows Defender as it provide additional security for your computer along with Norton 360 even though it has the Antispyware component. But, if you feel that it is not required or creating any conflicts, you can turn it off and runwhenever you need as an On-Demand Scanner.
