Windows Defender service does not start

Hi to everybody,

I have Norton Ghost installed and I do not have any other Symantec products. My OS is Windows Vista Ultimate

64 bit.

On start up I get windows error msg." Error Code 0x800106ba Application failed to initialize". This refers to           Windows defender.

Question: Will Norton Ghost stop window defender from starting? If yes then what is the solution?

Please help. Thanks.

I have tried what you suggested before. I have retried it yesterday. It does not help. I have even uninstalled

Norton Ghost, it does not help. Ofcourse uninstalling NG does not remove it complectly and hence the question.

I have AVG, but disabling it at start up also does not load Windows Defender. Also Window Defender does not

appear in Programs and features so I can not uninstall it and when I try to install it again I get the messsage that

it is already installed.

So, if you disable Ghost, AVG, etc and Defender still does not load, is there a reason why you are assuming that Ghost is responsible for preventing Defender from loading?  By the way, on Vista Windows Defender is not a seperate application to install.  It is a component of the OS in Vista.  When you uninstall Ghost, the only items that should stay should be associated with your backup jobs.  You can manually delete those if you choose, but they will not be related to anything that will run in memory.

Since you have an error code for Defender, have you taken a look at the Microsoft knowledge base or contacted MS support?

Hi Erik,

Thank you for helping with my problem.

I am not assuming anything. I asked about Norton Ghost becouse Norton security products do have issues with Window Defender and  in order to resolve the problem one has to compklectly remove the Nortaon programms.

Yes I have looked and asked about the error code in Microsot Support and other forums. So far my problem is

still not resolved.

You may need to speak with someone at Microsoft.  If you check the Windows Event log you may see a faulting application entry.  That will give you a bucket ID for the error you see that could be used to track down any submissions.  Since it sounds like you've cleaned things up pretty good, it should be a safe assumption that a conflict isn't at the root, but you'd have to make sure that all non-MS items are prevented from starting up to validate that.  It could be a dependancy failure of some kind.  You could try checking services.msc, find the Windows Defender service, right click and choose properties then click on the Dependancies tab, and see if any of the items in the list are disabled are reporting problems in the vent log.

Hi Erik,

Thank yoy. I have not done a selective startup and I will try to do as you suggest. I will also have a look at the event log.

I have posted my problem in Microsoft forum and they suggested to post in malware removal forums to make sure that the computer is not infected. I am certain that is not the case. But that (malware forum) is the last hope.

Thank you once again.
