While viewing the Windows Event Viewer I noticed the errors:
Task Scheduler failed to launch action "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\19.5.1.2\WSCStub.exe" in an instance of
task "\Norton WSC Integration".
and
Task Scheduler failed to start an instance of "\Norton WSC Integration"
I can see that the version numbers in the path are incorrect. About 7 months ago I installed Norton AntiVirus 2012 (version 19.x.x.x) but uninstalled it the same day using Norton's uninstall application (downloaded from Norton's web site) to make sure everything got completely uninstalled then I installed NAV 2011 (version 18.x.x.x). Apparently the WSC data does not get removed during an uninstall nor does it get corrected during an install of a different version.
I tried to change the path in Windows Task Scheduler but the "Norton WSC Integration" task does not exist in the task scheduler. I did find the incorrect path in the registry as well as several references to the wrong version number [19.5.1.2]. I deleted the references and changed the paths to the correct version [currently 18.7.1.3] but I still see the errors in the event viewer. This is probably because the task does not exist in the task scheduler, so it can not be launched. The task for Norton WSC Integration is under the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks] but I can not find the incorrect path from the error above in the registry. WSCStub.exe does not exist in the registry either. I can not figure out where Event Viewer is getting the path information from.
The WSCStub.exe application tries to run on every bootup. Can anyone tell me what it is for or actually does? My Norton AntiVirus appears to integrate and work fine with the Windows Security Center. The WSCStub.exe file is in my NAV 2011 folder (C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Engine\18.7.1.3) but maybe it is not used in the same way as it is with NAV 2012(?).
I also found the same incorrect path errors in the task scheduler under the task "Norton AntiVirus" for task names "Norton Error Processor" and "Norton Error Analyzer". Both had the same incorrect version numbers in the path pointing to the SymErr.exe application. Oddly, the task "Symantec" in the task scheduler had both paths (for processor and analyzer) correct with the current NAV 2011 version numbers. It looks like the Symantec task is the only one that gets updated when there are new version updates to the engine. I corrected the version numbers in the paths for the task "Norton AntiVirus" and they run now but I noticed that they run the exact same applications as the task "Symantec" does. They just run first and then the Symantec tasks run right after them so I disabled them.
