I upgraded to Norton internet Security 2008 on two Windows systems over the last week or so.  One XP pro and the other Home. but I noticed on one pc the windows Xp home system, in the system logs under scans, a logging for Windows File Scan as well as the same old Quick Scan or a Full System Scan loggings. What is this Windows File scan? and why isn't it showing up on my XP Pro system with the same settings set as my Home system.

Just asking Jarry,

In view history log in Norten Internet Security 2008, If you hit scan Results, there is on one system just the quick scan custom scan and full scan, but on my Xp home system it's got something called Windows sytem file scan. I was talking to someone about this at DSLreports..

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20294743-NIS-2008-Windows-File-Scan-What-is-it

its in the same log as all the system scans for Norton. I'll post a picture.

Thanks for the info Jarry.. I am checking on this for you, but I need to know which version of the product you have.

To find the version, start the program > click Help & Support. Then click About. Click the Norton Internet Security tab. The version number is right under Norton Internet Security.

Version 15.0.0.60

hi jarry - i have two XP pro computers running 2008 and cannot find any entries for the windows file scans either. i'm curious about what they are as well; can you confirm that the options in NIS are all identical (real-time, manual scanning, etc.) i've tried basically turning everything on for these two systems and still have no entries for windows file scans (but i'll keep trying).

Hi Jarry,

I checked with the developer and he says that this is the log of the Microsoft Office document virus scan.

NAV/NIS have an Office plugin that scans Office files whenever they are opened.

The scan has a misleading name. I hope to get the name changed in the upcoming 2009 version.

As to why it happens on one computer and not the other, do you have Office on one computer and not the other?

Yep your right, but it doesn't do it with my windows xp pro for some odd reason. I have office 2003 Student and Teacher edition installed on both pcs and it doesn't show the scan on norton system logs on pro.  but it does show the virusscanning in the bottom Left hand corner of word.I tried turing it off and on in norton but nothing.

Hi Jarry,

I am a little unclear on which system log you mean.. Are you looking at the History log or the Activity Log? (You get to the History log, by clicking View History on the left of the product interface; to get to Activity log, you click the Norton Internet Security tab, click Reports & Statistics and click View Activity Log..)

Having asked that, I have not seen Windows File scan in either of the logs. Would it be possible for you to attach a screenshot of what you are seeing?

Look forward for your reply..

Thanks,

RichC
