Windows Firewall and Norton Interent Security

I just downloaded the trial of Norton Internet Security several days ago, and recently I have tried to turn off my Windows Firewall completely. I do not need it, and I don't want. I went on Windows Firewall to disable it, but it won't let me change anything. All it said was this: "These setting are being managed by vendor application Norton Internet Security." I've been trying to figure out how to by exploring NIS, and looking it up online, but I haven't found out. I made a NIS account, hoping someone could help me. Thanks so much!

Welcome Dustin,

NIS does indeed control the windows firewall. It disables those portions of the feature that are in conflict and keeps secure those portions which continue to be used. Please do not try to change the way these two play well together. You run the risk of breaking both of them :smileysad:

Stay well and surf safe. We'll be here when you need us

Norton still uses the Windows Firewall Service. If you try to disable that, Norton will no longer work.

Hi DKBeastMode007

Just to add to what dickevans and peterweb have written, windows 7 and 8 have the firewall managed by Norton.  I have vista and can turn the firewall off and on even with the Norton firewall active.

The link below may be of some help.

Your link is to the Enterprise security product Symantec Endpoint Protection. There are many differences to how things are handled with Enterprise and Home User products. Enterprise products often have more control available because they are aimed at companies that will have IT professionals to manage security.

Home users 'usually' do not have the knowledge to make important security decisions about their systems.

FWIW, On my Vista laptop, going to Control Panel > Windows Firewall  is shown as OFF and tells me my Computer is not protected.

By going to Security Center, it says my Firewall is turned on, and using the dop down arrow it tells me my NIS reports it is turned on and lists the Windows Firewall as OFF and NIS as ON.  There is also a NOTE: Two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with each other.

My experience has always been that the install of NIS turns off the Windows Firewall and I have juist verified the Windows Firewall Service is also still running in Vista as it is in Win 7.

Also attempting to turn on the Windows Firewall presents a Security Alert basically saying NIS  Firewall provides the best defense and recommends you turn off the Windows Firewall.  If you continue to tun on the Windows Firewall it will turn on - but doesn't turn off the NIS Firewall - thus you canhave conflicts with both running.

I went back in and turned the Windows Firewall off giving complete control back to NIS - IMHO as it should be!

Also I believe intesec was just trying to point out the difference between the Windows Firewall in Win 7/8 and Vista -  just used a  reference that wasn't totally correct for the subject - as pointed out by peterweb the key was in the URL - business/support.

Thanks for your help guys! I have figured out the solution.

Some in accuracies here. True, can't have 2 Alpha Dogs. In it's simplest terms whenever a AV suite gets loaded onto a Windows box MSFT's FW takes on a secandary role ..but it is (if all things are  configured  correctly) there ready to "take the wheel should the primary AV fail  If not (hit the panic button :smileysurprised:). ...no don't freak just shut er' down and take a 5 er'

pull the ethernet And most importantly should be tested on accasion (like a smoke detecor) disabling the main FW to see if the MSFT FW Springs into action (which would be noted accessing the services).. Hopefully this makes sense.

Since Windows 7, simply disabling the Norton Firewall will not cause the Windows Firewall to take over.  Essentially, Windows 7 and 8 will only recognize one system firewall at a time so, when a third-party firewall is installed, Windows considers it THE firewall and you will have no firewall protection at all if you disable it.  The only way activate the Windows Firewall is to uninstall any third-party firewall.  As peterweb mentioned, the Windows Firewall Service controls other security measures and needs to be left on, even though the Windows Firewall itself is dormant.

Are you talking to me? Are you employed by or an authority on the Window's OS  or you some ...well I won't say it and let you puff out your chest. Have fun robot
