Windows Firewall

Sigi

I would Recommend re-installing Norton Internet Security 2009 using the Norton Removal Tool.

Also, how long have has Norton Internet Security 2009 installed?  Thanks!

Hi BTU,

Before reinstalling Norton to correct this issue, let me ask a few questions.

When you open the main Norton window, in the center section labeled Internet, look to the right to be sure "Smart Firewall" is ON.

Now when you get this message from Norton, does it ask to make Norton your default Firewall? (or something to that effect?)

Normally during the installation process, Norton turns off the Windows Firewall by default.

Do you have any other security software installed?

Also, if you can tell us which operating system you are using along with the service pack, that would further help us with diagnosing your issue.

Thanks.

Hi Phil_D,

The customer is using Windows' X.P.; no idea of the S.P. though.

Thanks Floating_Red.

Missed that. Must be time for a break.

Howdy,

Before I ticked "Do not show this message again" on the alert I was getting each time I started, I wasn't asked to choose NIS as a default.  I wish I had been, though.  Life would be simpler.

I re-installed XP only a few days ago.

The Smart Firewall is on.  As far as I can tell, it never goes off, either.  It's just that Windows runs at the same time.

I don't have any other security software installed.  I suppose that there could be a conflict with a recent update from IBM.  But I have no way of knowing.

I'm using XP with Service Pack 3 and it has been updated.

Thanks for your interest in this.

Let's try something.

Turn OFF the Norton Smart Firewall and in the next prompt, select "Permanently" and then hit OK.

Exit out of the Norton interface.

Restart your computer and then open the Norton interface and Turn ON the Norton Smart Firewall.

Once done, check to see if the Windows Firewall is still on.

Hi There,

Thanks for the note.

I tried what you suggested.  I also went to Windows Firewall in the Control Panel and unticked everything in the Advanced Tab.

When I re-started, the Windows Firewall was active again and the Local Area Connection tick box in the Advance Tab had re-ticked itself.

So .... I'm a bit lost on this one.  I'm up for ideas.

Thanks,

BTU

Hi BTU,

Would you mind checking your Windows Security Center?

Control Panel > Security Center.

Look at the last entry on the left under Resources:  "Change the way Security Center alerts me."

Is the text color the same as the text above or is it greyed out and not accessible?

Thanks.

Hi There,

I've done it.  Nothing is greyed out and everything is accessible.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

BTU

Well, something is strange because by default Norton should have disabled the alert section of Windows Security Center and should also have disabled Windows Firewall.

Try this: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Once the Services window is open, look for "Security Center".  If it is set for Automatic, double click on it, and in the drop down box set it for "Disabled" and then try to "Stop" the service. A restart may be required to stop the service.

Once you have done that, try to turn off the Windows Firewall.

Let me know how you do with this.

Yep.

Something's strange.  I tried what you asked and could do it without a re-start.  After I finished, I re-started just to see what would happen.

The Windows Firewall was there and running hand in hand with Norton.

Since this procedure didn't work, I went back to Administrative Tools and reset to the original configuration.

I'm stumped.  What more should I try?

Thanks,

BTU

I'm stumped too. Let me think about this.

In the mean time, maybe someone else will have a suggestion. I'll point some other Forum members to this post to see what they think.

I won't forget about it (I don't like to loose to the machine).

Fabulous!

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

Hi BTU,

I'm still here.

Let me ask you what may seem to be a very simple question, but can be overlooked.

When you go to Control Panel > Windows Firewall and click the button to turn it off, are you hitting "OK" before closing the window?

If you are doing that, then try to disable Windows Firewall this way: Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on Local Area Connection > Properties > Advanced. Try to turn off the Windows Firewall through there.

Let me know.

BTU,

I am concerned that NIS isn't doing it what it normally does:  Quizzing you about turning off Windows Firewall, and then doing it.  And I am concerned that Windows' Security Center is not stating the presence of NIS 2009 when you open it.

So I am going to suggest what an earlier poster suggested:

1.  Make sure your have all MS Updates by running Windows or MS Update.

2.  Uninstall NIS 2009 from the ADD/REMOVE component of the Control Panel.  And stay off the internet for the rest of these steps (even disable your network connections).

3.  Using the Norton Removal Tool to clean up the debris (this will remove all other Norton products, but my memory tells me you had none).

4.  Run a decent registry/artifact cleaner such as ccleaner.

5.  Reinstall NIS 2009, then re-enable your internet connections so you can activate the product.

6.  Run Live Update until you are asked to reboot, then reboot.

7.  If at this point, the problem with Windows Firewall persists, then it is more serious than we have thought.  Tell us and we'll put our heads together.

After note:  I don't recall you being asked if you have any other security software installed (even if inactive), any kind (antispyware, antiadware, etc).  That could be the problem right there.

4.

I have two questions.

1. What service pack of XP are you running?

2. what is the exact version of NIS you are using? please have a look for that under the support button

Hi

This a known problem once in a blue moon, for XP SP2 & SP3

You will be getting the likes of

Two things you can do is,

1. Use "regedit" to disable the firewall, by going to this key

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile

In the "Value Data" box type 0, and click OK

2.

The second thing you can do is also disable the Firewall Group Policy.

Click Start

Then Run

Type GPEDIT.MSC and click on OK.

The Windows policy that allows you to disable the Internet Connection Firewall for all users including administrators is at the following location in the Windows policy tree:

"Local Computer Policy" then

"Computer Configuration" then

"Administrative Templates" then

"Network" then

"Network Connections" then

"Windows Firewall" then

"Standard Profile"

Now follow the arrows numbered below

After opening "Standard Profile" (1) you will see in the right hand pane "Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections" (2) Highlight it then Click "Properties" (3), Select "Disabled" (4), Then click "Apply" (5). and "OK"

Now in the XP Security Centre you will see you can't accidentally turn on the Windows Firewall, And you will see the like of this, (instead of the first screenshot, Although the Firewall is ON it is the 3rd party Firewall that its monitoring, Like the Virus Protection in the Security Centre further down.

Quads: That may seem a bit confusing to Users.  If you do understand Quads instructions, you may follow them, but please answer Stu and anyone else who has asked questions first so we can get a better picture of what is going on and see what they suggest.  Thank you!

I think an un-install then re-install should Fix the Problem with the Norton Removal Tool since there has been so many suggestions here that have not worked (like I suggested in Post 02).

Run>services>disable Windows Firewall and Security Center.
