Need help turning my windows firewall off. I’ve just read that Norton and Window firewalls should not be running together. Thanks in advance.
Usually, Windows Firewall is automatically turned off by Norton. If you want to make sure that Windows Firewall is turned off, please do the following (in Vista; should be the same in XP): go to Control Panel, then to Windows Firewall. It should say: "Windows Firewall is off", with a red bar above the message saying: "Your computer is not protected: turn on Windows Firewall".
You are absolutely right in that you should not allow Windows Firewall and Norton Firewall to run together. If your Windows Firewall is off, please make sure that your Norton Firewall is on! ;-D
Hope that helped ;-)
1. Click on windows icon, bottom left of screen
2. Click on control panel in menu
3. Click on security centre in control panel
4. Click on Firewall option, it will tell you what firewall is enabled.
5. If it says windows firewall is enabled, disable it, I think you can do it from there. If you have installed Norton your Norton firewall should be showing, make sure it says it is enabled. Best to do all this offline.
Ok thanks but before I switch it off I've just checked my nortons firewall status and it says "smart firewall - on" so is it ok to do it now? I'm rubbish with computers so thanks for the help.
There are also options to configure for "uncommon protocol" and "Firewall reset". What do I do for these?

If your Norton Firewall is on, then you're fine. You can let those two options be; the second option is if you want to reset your firewall, in which case you'll lose all your firewall rules.
Thanks very much to the both of you for the help; much appreciated.
You’re welcome If your problem is solved, please don’t forget to close this thread.
