Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working

Hello,

I'm looking for help.  I accidently dowloaded a trojan virus and it took down my Windows Vista Defender.  I ended up starting up in Safe Mode and ran Norton virus scan and it ended up finding 9 different trojan viruses and removed them.

However, now when I boot my pc I get Windows Host Process (Rundll32) has stopped working.  I have never received this message before.

Has the virus actually corrupted or damaged something?

Is there a way to recover or fix?

Additional Note:  After receiving this error, I again booted in safe mode and again ran the virus scan and it ran clean.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's a neat link on the NEW! It shows this:

Hello,

Please let me know if this solved your problem and mark this post as solved/accepted solution so that other users can benefit from this as well.

Thanks.

What version of Norton do you have?  You can fine the information in the Help & Support | About menu (in the form of xx.xx.xx.xxx).

If the safe mode scan is clean and you trust that, you can run system file check:

I think you are running Vista (if not skip the UAC part of this)

Vista

Start | type cmd into "Start Search"

right click on the cmd.exe list in the list box and select Run as Administrator

then type in sfc /scannow and press enter.

XP

Start | Run

sfc / scannow and enter

Windows will now scan your protected system files (and some settings) and restore them to their proper settings.

Looks like you are not able to the link which I was referring to.

Go to  http://www.symantec.com/norton/antivirus

Select 'How it Works' tab.

Under Features, select NEW! Recovery tool boots and repairs badly infected PCs.* [More Info]

Thanks for the advice.  In the end, despite Norton's running clean, trojans were still lurking.  Upon subsequent reboot, Windows Defender alerted me that Hiloti and Vundo were present.  It really was a mess and many hours of research to figure out how to resolve.  Nortons would seem to clean them, but reboot after reboot they would still come back despite turning off System Restore.

I'm guessing there were pieces that Norton's could not identify and remove.  The end result was I downloaded 2 additional pieces of software to solve the issue.  Thanks.

Hi nearbeer1,

Glad to know that you got rid of the infections in your computer.

Can you share with us some information about the tools that you downloaded to resolve this issue?

Thanks,

I ended up downloading SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebyte Anit-Malware.  Seems like either one or a combination of the two did the trick.  Thanks.

Hi nearbeer1,

Thanks for the quick confirmation.
