Windows Live Messenger

I hope that the latest version of Windows Live Messenger instant messenger will soon be approved with the insight

part of Norton's Antivirus 16.7.2.11. This is the latest version of the program and it's a required install of it for security reasons. Shortly, if you don't have that version, you won't be able to use Windows Live Messenger program. It isn't mandatory yet, but it will be soon.

Hi

I meant to add in my subject something about getting Windows Live Messenger approval in Norton's Insight scan. Maybe then someone would answer.

Hello floplot,

I do not use WLM very often, so I am not familiar with the new version you are referring to.

My NIS 2010 Insight lists version 14.0.8064 as trusted.

I'm not clear as to your concern with the initial Insight rating of a new version. The Insight rating will not prevent you from using a newer version, but will only affect the scanning as to whether or not those files are analyzed during a scan.

Hi

Mine did also with the older version. The newest version which you are required to use is now version 14.0.8089.726. If you don't upgrade to that version, you won't be able to use messenger. I know that the insight scan influences the time the idle scans take. I just would like to see that as approved as the older versions were and this new version is required as a safety improvement. Well, not required yet, but will be shortly. There won't be any announcement for you to upgrade it, it will just stop working if you haven't upgraded it. It won't be on Windows update either. I just feel since it's like part of Windows or put out by Windows actually, that it should be approved.

Even though it is published by Microsoft, I don't know that is reason enough for Norton to put an immediate stamp of approval on it.

For everyone's best interest, it would be worthwhile for Norton to collect data, analyze the information and observe the number of users through Norton Community Watch.

I almost forgot. In case you are concerned about the trust level of a new file, with NIS 2010 you do have the option to manually trust a file.

Hope that helps!

Hi

So that insight scan approves files by the popularity of the files and not just by the safety of the files? I have to use Antivirus 16.7.2.11 which is a combination of .10 also because I got the Antivirus as part of System Works 12 Standard. Since my subscription doesn't run out till the end of the year, I am stuck with having to use the older version of Antivirus which isn't even the complete .11 version. System Works is being discontinued so I can't manually do anything with those files other than to look to see if they are approved and I don't have to do that since I can see which files are not approved. I didn't know files on a computer was a basis of determining if the file is safe enough to not have to be scanned all the time, that is if you are using popular files.

Hi floplot,

There is a very good blog article here about how Norton Insight works in the 2009 product line.

It should answer your questions about how the trust ratings are arrived at.
