Thanks for your suggestion and directing me to that website. However the fixes didn't help. I'll continue to search that other site, but it seems this norton site isn't the correct board for this discussion, unless there is a conflict between Windows mail and NIS2009. I don't think there is, but thought I'd check the readers of Norton's board to see what more knowledgeable user have to say. I'll keep an eye out for replies, and will post a fix if I find one.
I Googled your situation ("windows mail command failed execute can't open attachments") and it would appear that your trouble is an experience being shared by many. Worse, multiple bugs seem to be responsible, so that the most commonly recommended solution allows some attachments to be opened but it does not work for .jpg and .txt files because that is a whole separate bug. Anyway, this thread seems to cover all the particulars and offers at least a partial solution along with whatever consolation you can take in the fact that you are not alone. Hope it helps.
To check whether Norton is causing the problem, disable the following features from NIS 2009 one by one(for temporary purpose) and then try to download the attachments:
- Email Scan
- Microsoft Office Scan
- AntiSpam
- Smart Firewall
- AutoProtect
If you are able to download attachments after turning off any of the features, let us know. This problem can also happen when there is not enough free disk space on your hard disk to save the attachment. So, you can try Disk Cleanup, emptying Recyle Bin, deleting Windows Temporary Files, and deleting IE temporary files and cache.
SendofJive - I found that board earlier, and it wasn't any help, although I will monitor it to see if a fix that works for me appears.
Yogesh - I did as you suggested and turned off each feature individually, and tested after it was disabled. I also tested with all the listed features turned off. In each case I received the "command failed to execute" message.
As I said before I don't think this is an issue with NIS2009. As the link SendofJive indicates, I think it is a bug in Windows Mail. At the suggestion of another contributor to a different board, I changed my default mail program to Windows Live Mail, and that program allows files (txt, jpg, and eml) to be opened. I think I'll just change my email program, although Windows Mail is more like Outlook Express that I'm used to looking at. I'm sure I'll adjust.
Thanks for all your help. I'll keep an eye out for any solutions
