Windows Media Center- Firewall Help

Hello guys i am trying to configure my windows media center with my xbox 360. I just can’t seem to allow this program through my firewall. Not sure on what i should provide you with but i will try this

Current OS windows 7 32bit
Current 4 port router Lynksys BEFSR41 version 2.00.4
Norton 360 3.0 Premeir
IE 7

Does it work with your firewall disconnected? Or even when N360 isn’t installed?

If it works when you done what Stu recommended, do these steps:

Open the Network Security Map (little house icon on the main window of 360), and set your home network's (by clicking on Edit) trust level to Full trust, and by the connected devices set the same to the XBox.

Let us know the results.

This is were the error mesage takes me .

In the network security map i have set the media device to full trust and my pc to shared. This is in the local area connection.

I just noticed in trust control the same media device is listed here. Physical address is the same.

It sais you should open a port (UDP port 1900). To open do these steps:
1. Open the Norton 360 main window, and Click on Settings -> Firewall -> Program Rules
2. On the list find C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe, select it, and click on Modify
3. On the new window click on Add
4. Select Allow, click Next
5. Select From, click Next
6. Only the computers listed below, click Add, write the IP addresse of the device in, click OK, click Next
7. Select UDP, 'Only communications...', click Add, select Local and Individually specified port, write 1900 in, click OK, click Next
8. If you want logging about this port, check that to be selected, or just leave it blank, click Next
9. You can add here a name for the rule, click Next
10. Click Finish
11. Select the created rule (last one), and click on Move up until it is the first one
12. Click OK
13. Click Apply
14. Close the settings ans the main window of 360
15. Check the XBox

Let us know how it worked. ;)

This did not work for me :(. I have been trying most of the forums answers here and i cannot get it to work. it worked fine when I had windows vista, now i got windows 7 32bit with norton 360 v3.0. I tried the FULL TRUST answer and this. I also tried to give all the little programs like svchost.exe full acces (but not all of those in the list were on om computer)

I’v been talking to xbox support and they keep saying it HAS to be my firewall that bugs it…

What should i do?

What happens if you disable the norton firewall or if you completely turn off the product*?

* To completely turn off Norton do these steps (only NIS before version 2010, and 360 before version 4.0):
1. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services
2.On the services  list find Norton 360/Internet Security
3. Click on Stop (left upper corner)
4. Check the not working device how is it now working
5. After the test click on Start to restart the norton program (same place where you found Stop)

Let us know the results.

Hi ocek

With WIN 7, you need N360 version 3.5, not 3.0. If you have a current valid key for N360, you can upgrade to 3.5 for free.

Hey,

Thanks for your fast response!

How do i upgrade to Norton 3.5? I cannot find it on the Norton webpage? I will try the "turn-off-norton-solution" in a minute. But if this works how do I fix it anyways, I dont want to turn of my Norton when I am going to use my Media Center

EDIT: i completed the steps to shut down norton 360 and I was succesfull but still it did not work :(

/Ocek

It updates itself via Live Update. If you installed 3.0 on Win7, and it is not upgraded itself SONAR would fail until it gets the update. So if you have no Red X on 360, you have 3.5 too.
Plus you can check the version number if you click on the main window -> Help & Support -> About menu.

Hi ocek

You can get N360 version 3.5 here. Please use the correct version according to how much storage you have.

Norton 360 Standard Edition version 3.5

http://www.norton.com/n360s_3

Norton 360 Premier Edition version 3.5

http://www.norton.com/n360p_3

Thanks, i saw now that i already got 3.5. Still none of the solutions work :( I windows 7 does not want me to use my Media Center... Any last hopes?

So you got the error after 360 is fully disabled too? If yes, then it is not Norton what causing the error.

Maybe I have an idea: when I first set my Windows 7 to connect to a network on an other machine Windows 7 automatically set a password for the network to protect the PC. On my other Win7 PC I have the same. Maybe you have to configure for the Media Center device to connect to the win7 machine by using this password.
You can find and change the password this way:
1. Open the Network and Sharing Center (from Control Panel or right click on your network's icon in the system tray)
2. Click on 'Choose homegroup and sharing options'
3. Click on 'Change Password'
4. On the new window select again 'Change Password'
5. Copy the password to a paper, or write in one of yours
6. Click Next, click Finish
7. Close the windows

8. Change the connection in your Media Center device with the password to connect to your win7 pc
9. Test the connection

Let us know the results.

I appreceate your efforts to help me!

I shall try this when I come home later, still I wonder where i should put in this password in my Xbox. Seems as i have turned it upside-down for everything but i we shall see.

/ocek

Well, as I thought i cannot find a 'place' in my xbox where to put the new password. Anyone know where this would be? The only place I could find was something called PPPoE settings, I tried to put it in there but then I could not connect to Xbox live so I suppose it did not work.. Anywhere else I should try this password? In my comp or on the xboc?

Since both my computer and my Xbox is connect in the same modem/router and both can access internet in their own ways. Norton CAN see my xbox and has full trust but still they cannot connect throu media center. Xbox support is suppose to call me back in 2 days, i hope that they got a solution.

Hi ocek

Since you mentioned PPPoE, that means you are using DSL. Your DSL modem is most likely a modem/router. If it is a modem/router, then you have a firewall in your modem/router. If you go to the web page for your router part of the modem, you can configure rules there also and port forward or port trigger the necessary ports there for the xbox.. If you are using a regular router, then you should be able to configure the router page the same way for the xbox. I think the problem may be with your router or modem/router settings.

But how can that be? I still got connection to xbox live. Well, anyways I found the port forwarding site for my modem but till I have no idea on how to perform a succesfull atempt…

Thanks for still answering me!

Hi ocek

Perhaps you can find instructions for the model of your modem/router or router on the net or if the modem/router came from your ISP, you can perhaps call your ISP about it.

Instructions for the setup key are here:

A troubleshooting guide for connection problems can be seen here:

Hope these are of some use.
