Version still the same :( I found the Update to version 16.5.0.134 but it was indicated that this is a new installation, and the patch for update to 16.5.0.134 will be pushed later. Does this still count ? or do I uninstall / reinstall NIS with version 16.5.0.134 ? rgds John
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that you could also get 16.5 by going to the Norton Update Center. Regardless of where you get the 16.5 update from, you can just install it over your current version.
We're looking in to this issue where alert dialogs, including reboot alert dialog, causes the Media Center session to disconnect.
As for your first issue you were having where the background tasks dialog would disconnect the session, do you still see that with 16.5 fully installed on your computer?

The folder c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.5.0.134 has a create date of 07 March 2009, 03:32:16. I assume that this was the date when 16.5 was applied to my system, right?
I had not realised that a release had taken place until I searched the forum last week. I had been manually setting Silent Mode on up to that point and my last failure with event id 107 for 'SymNotifyWnd' was therefore on 23 February. I do use Media Center extenders every day so the problem tended to show up regularly but it was not happening every day. I can see from my event log that I had a 9 day trouble free gap in December, for example.
I have not experience of 'SymNotifyWnd' issue since 16.5 installed on 7 March but I think that I will need to run for another week before I can be sure.
I updated to version 16.2.0.7 last night, and tried to reproduce the problem today:
I found that the media Extender disconnected two times during a movie play. I did'nt watched the movie but after app. 30 min the connection was lost. Previous the disconnection was more frequent. I then selected the "silent mode" for 6 hours, and until now the connection has NOT been lost.
Just lookin at the previous mails, I realised that I did NOT get the right version installed. Eventhouh that I downloaded the 16.5 version. Something is wrong in the state of Denmark :)
I just tried the same process again. Contacted the download center asking for a new update, and the same thing happens. There are a new verison woudl you ... bla bla. and yes download satup.exe. Executing this the un-installer ask if I would uninstall and after the reboot NIS has just been uninstalled. I have to start the "install Norton" icon on the desktop, and voila .. same version again .. I'm confused !!!
We’ve been able to reproduce the issue that some of you are experiencing with some Norton dialogs causing Media Center Extenders to disconnect.
16.5 included a fix for an issue where the “toaster pop-ups” on the bottom right corner cause the Media Center Extender to disconnect. We expected this to take care of all the conflicts that were going on with the Media Center Extender, but the dialog issue is now persistent.
We’re working on correcting this issue, but will have to implement some new features to make this more configurable for Media Center Extenders. Unfortunately, it’s not likely that this issue will be corrected until the next version (2010) comes out. As you know, you’ll be eligible for a free update to 2010 when it is released. We will have a beta of the 2010 software sometime this summer. Please keep an eye on the forums for any updates on Public Betas.
Some temporary workarounds that can help your media extender from being disconnected is to manually turn on Silent Mode. You can do this for up to 6 hours at a time.
Another method you can use, is to put an application in your computer in to “Full Screen Mode” before starting your Media Extender. This is different than Maximizing a Windows. When a program is in Full Screen Mode, the window Title Bar will not be present. For instance, open Internet Explorer or Firefox and push the F11 key. This will put the window in to Full Screen Mode. If you do this, you will not see any dialogs from the 2009 products.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused. Please know that we are working diligently to ensure that this is corrected in future versions. Again, I would encourage everyone to download the Public Beta when it is released so we can make sure this issue is corrected before releasing the next version of our software.
I've been watching this thread to see if the issue that Norton is causing with Media Center Extenders for some time.
Your latest post seems to indicate that this is not a high priority issue for the product group. I can't tell you the frustration that this issue causes. If you can imagine having someone else randomly turning off your TV repeatedly unless you tell them ahead of time that you want them to leave you alone for 6 hours at a time, you would experience a good bit of the frustration for yourself.
I hope this issue can be addressed by a motivated developer (i.e. one using a Media Center Extender with a spouse) well before 2010.
I know you have addressed your comment to Symantec and I am just a customer like yourself. I share your frustration with this problem and wish that it had been completely resolved by now.
Having said this, my experience today is that the latest version really does virtually eliminate the TV or video crashing. The crashes caused by NIS 2009 displaying a message box about performing background checks ("toaster pop-ups") are gone - I have not had a single repeat of the problem since receiving version 16.5.0.134. Thank you Symantec.
The only issue I have experienced since the update is when NIS 2009 had downloaded a further update and wanted to the system to be rebooted. The reboot reminder pop up caused a succession of crashes on one day. Symantec have pointed out that product updates requiring reboots are relatively rare. I have only had this one instance since applying 16.5.0.134. I therefore no longer set silent mode on for 6 hours every time we use Media Center, which is every morning and evening (sad but true). If you have the update I would encourage you to put aside your previous experience and stop using silent mode ever 6 hours. You might get very infrequent crashes but for all practical purposes the problem has been fixed.
I would encourage anyone who reports a problem to Symantec to be persistent and provide them detailed event log and other error message. If you are on the latest and greatest version and do get a problem, let them know the version and copy the bit from the event log showing the error and the date and time it/they occured. My experience is that Symantec do address customer problems. I have accepted that redesigning NIS 2009 to fix the final issue with Media Center will not be an overnight job.
I have watched this thread for 2 months. My version has already updated itself per the About window and it is not fixed.
The work around is ridiculous.
This is beyond disappointing. The leading AV product chooses not to fix a bug that admittedly causes a total lack of functionality with our system. Evidently no one at Symantec uses a media center to watch tv/recorded tv/movies etc. as this issue causes a total lack of functionality - the extender reboots itself frequently and randomly.
And, reported in November, decided in April that it will have to wait until the next program version! This is Symantec - an international, multi-billion dollar company.
This isn't company support; this is a purposeful decision not to fix a known problem. This isn't a minor issue - this problem causes a total lack of functionality with a $300 plus networked device!
At this time I would like to request a full refund of my purchase price so I can uninstall this product and move to one that works; hopefully with a company that has a philosophy to fix problems when they happen. It's called doing the right thing.
Updating my previous post. I have had one more instance of the crash caused by Symantec releasing an update that required Vista to be restart. I have therefore had two episodes since applying 16.5.0.134 and both ceased being a problem after a PC reboot. I have not operated any work arounds since realising that 16.5.0.134 had been installed.
jjynchhome, if you have the same version I do but you are experiencing the problem of an XBox 360 extender displaying a blue screen that talks about an unexpected UI being launched, I am guessing that you have a different problem. It may be that something else is causing NIS to put up message boxes, something that I have not experienced. You would need to give Symantec some more information about what messages NIS is putting out on your PC screen that also crash the extender connection.
If you are experiencing an extender rebooting or failing in another way it may not be caused by NIS. You should look at the Event Viewer and confirm what message is recorded when the failures happen.
The first extender connection crashing issues I had were caused by network problems. Two of my extenders connect to the PC via Netgear HDX101 Powerline HD Ethernet Adapters. One of these adapters developed an intermittent (overheating?) problem and extender blue screen crashes resulted. That's when I first realised that Vista Media Centre, for all of its joys, is rather sensitive to errors elsewhere. Microsoft obviously developed and tested it in the lab with reliable network connections, which is probably not what most homes have. I have therefore had cause to curse both MS and Symantec but one of them did produce a fix when I explained the problem.
