Thanks for the help. I currently have Service Pack 2. Had installed ATI driver 8.442.30 2 weeks ago. Experienced problems right away, so with some help, rolled back to the previous driver 8.204.00. All my windows update are current as far as I know, I do automatic updates.
Hello, I have Norton anti-virus 2008, with auto updates on my laptop with XPpro. When going to use windows media player, I clicked on the icon and the blue screen came up with Stop Error 0X0000008E. I shut down, waited a few minutes then turned on. Message from Windows said that it had recovered from serious error; sent in error report which came back as saying the error was caused by anti-virus program. Also had had the message one of the files containing the systems registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. Recovery was successful.
Also, now my entire screeen has been changed, a box came up with personalized settings being set up. It even came up with the screen that wants to give you a tour of XP.
Would appreciate any help. Noted that there seem to be problems with SP3, but to my knowledge I do not have that on my machine.
I apologize for the confusion. You had a problem with your ATI driver, which you rollback manually, and now when you run Windows Media Player you get Stop Error 0X0000008E. Is this correct? From the sound of things, there might be a problem with the manual rollback of the driver, which may be causing this error. Can you provide a screenshot of the error message you receive, indicating that the problem is caused by Norton AntiVirus? Thanks!
Hi Tony, I am a relative newbie and am not sure how to go about doing a screen shot. Am hesitant to try media player again unless I have someone around that will be able to help if things go awry! That probably won’t be until next week. After rolling back the ATI driver all worked well without problems for 1 1/2 weeks until I tried to use the media player.
You will have to upload to another site (like photobucket.com) and click the INSERT IMAGE link. Then paste the URL into the popup, and you're all set.
Have you tried to contact AMD support for help installing the driver? This might be a good way to resolve the problem in a better way. Thanks!
From what I know of the 0X0000008E STOP error, it's usually a hardware issue. It is helpful to know which service pack of Windows XP you are running. Right-click My Computer and select PROPERTIES. Select the General tab, and you should see which service pack you have. Let us know which one you are currently running, and we can research the issue further.
I would also recommend running Windows Update to get the latest XP updates installed on your system. From reading other users with the same STOP error code, it is usually linked to the installation of new hardware, and firmware and driver issues that sometimes follow. Have you recently installed any new hardware? Are your Windows Updates current? Any information about recently added hardware, or recently updated drivers and firmware is appreciated. Thanks!
