Norton is working properly don't worry.

Please try this to reset Windows Security Center

I followed the steps exactly and that did not fix it.

Is there any reason you have Windows Defender off? It can work in harmony with NIS2008. I’d turn it back on and see if those orange colors turn to green…

Windows Defender is running, and has been.

Well I think it has. I can start it up but on the next system start it's not running, I have to start it myself.

Running Vista 64 here. NIS '08 itself turns off Windows Defender upon install.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

hi CLLL - it's possible that the registry protection inherent in SpyBot's TeaTimer prevented a proper NIS installation or an MS update... it doesn't really seem related to the specific problem you have listed, but blocking a reg entry from MS or Norton via TT could induce unpredictable results.

Run LiveUpdate and get the latest version of Norton Internet Security. NIS version 15.5 was updated to work with Vista SP1. Microsoft made big changes to how Windows Security Center works in SP1. If you still see this issue after running LiveUpdate the only work around is to reinstall Norton Internet Security so that it re-registers with WSC.

The bug you are seeing is a Microsoft issue in Windows Security Center where the WSC registration data gets lost. They are currently working on a hot fix for it, but I understand it won't be ready any time soon.

Hope that helps.

Garret -- thanks for the pointer. Two questions -- should we expect that update if we are running NIS2008 under XP Pro (SP3 in my case)? Is there an equivalent problem / solution for N360?

My NIS 2008 is still on 15.0.0.60 under XP and no update when I ran LUD a few minutes ago.

TIA

I only mention that because your screen shot clearly shows that Windows Defender is turned off.

Huh? But defender is on...

Also, every time I run liveupdate it says there are no new updates available.

My bad. There is no regular LiveUpdate patch to 15.5 and it turns out it's not needed for XP anyway. 15.0 will work fine for XP SP2/3 and Vista SP0/1 . The 15.5 version is to address the changes that Microsoft is making mandatory for all products that use WSC. This isn't required for several months. We're just ahead of the curve with releasing our update. Don't worry if you don't have it.

The original issue can still be resolved by a uninstall and reinstall of Norton Internet Security as a work around for the Microsoft bug.

Sorry for the confusion.

This happened on my Dad's machine.  To fix it I did the following.

1. Open Windows Security

2. Open Norton

3. Disable auto-protect and the firewall in Norton

4. Close Norton.

5. In the Windows Security window for the firewall click "turn it on" and then select Norton Internet Security.

6. In the Norton window that pops up click "Fix" and then close the Norton window.

When I did this, Windows Security changes to show the firewall and everything else was good.

No problem – BTDT.

Hi Garret,

I have taken the chance to upgrade NIS 15.0 to 15.5 on Vista Business installed  in February 07 and installed SP1 a month ago.

During this last month with SP1 there have been some unexpected behavior of the whole system.

After 15.5 entered the sceen, everything seems for time being working much better, and faster.

So far there are no issues.

Kurt

Where did you get the update? I’m not seeing it.

Hi ScottR,

I found the link on this Forum, but I have forgotten where.

Only by just uninstalling NIS 15.0 and reinstalling it again,

have given better peformance.

So, the installation of Vista SP1 standalone on top of a working system,

I have found is not the right method of installation.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I did a backup of my system before doing this, in case of not succeeding.

Kurt

hi ScottR - latest version is available here.

Sweet! Thank you :smileyhappy:
