Windows Security Center

Windows security center on one of my PC's has suddenly started warning me that I have no antivirus software of firewall installed and has stopped recognizing Norton, any ideas why?? Its a real pain in the neck. Thanks

Hi PaulCampion....

I am sorry for what happened to you...!!!!

Open the Norton Icon in the desktop, check the System status on top of the Norton screen. If it says "secure" you dont have to worry about the windows security alert message.....

Else please let me know do you have windows vista or 7, what type of Norton product and the version you have installed... and also let me know what is the exact error message...from windows?

Let me know If you have any issues..!!!!

Hi there, Norton says sytem is secure but why has this suddenly appeared? all my other PC's and laptops are fine. I've got Windows Vista, Norton 360 version 5.1.0.29.

Thanks

Paul

Hi paulcampion,

I understood your concern, but you have to convince windows vista that what you are doing is safe. Because,  you have the Norton is installed and the system status is secured. You can ignore this security alert from Windows vista.

To block the message:-

--> When you get the security alert message, right click on  it.

--> Click on "open security center" and in the left panel of the window.

--> Select "Change the way security center alerts me"

--> Then select the option " Dont notify me, and dont display icon"

Let me know if you have any issues...!!!!

OK, I did now about what you have suggested, however my concern is why after all this time does windows not recognise Norton, what has suddenly caused windows to conflict with Norton. To be honest I don't like security issues conflicting I must admit I have never had this problem with McAfee or Kaspersky they have always worked quite well with each other.

Do you not have a fix for this then????

Thanks

Paul

No, you shouldn't just ignore it. That's not very good advice.

Please try this (kudos to an article on PCHell.com):

1) Right-click on My Computer

2) Click on Manage

3) Click on the plus sign(+) next to Services and Applications in the left-hand column

4) Click on Services

5) Find the service called Windows Management Instrumentation, right-click on it, and choose Stop.

6) Open My Computer

7) Double-click on Drive C (or whatever drive Windows is installed on)

8) Double-click on the Windows folder

9) Double-click on System32

10) Double-click on WBEM

11) Right-click on the Repository folder and click Delete and remove it

12) Close the My Computer windows and return to the Windows services screen using steps 1 - 4 shown above

13) Find the service called Windows Management Instrumentation, right-click on it, and choose Start. Restarting this service will rebuild the repository folder information.

14) Wait a minute or two for the folder to rebuild completely, then restart your computer

This happens with all security programs, though, in rare cases, not just Norton. It is a Windows issue. I have seen it on forums for pretty much every security product on the market, including both of the ones you mention. There is something that can get corrupted in the Windows settings that control the recognition of security software. Most often, it can be fixed by rebuilding the repository, as explained in the link above. Doing as it suggests is perfectly safe; you will delete a folder, but it rebuilds itself, and it should contain the correct information after that.

The next step would be uninstalling and reinstalling the security product, but please try this first. It's fast and easy.

OK, many thanks for your help I'll give it a go. Be handy to know if it happends on any other of my PC's as well.

Hi Paul,

Given time most every error will occur on most every computer. Sorry :smileysad:

Hi there,

Oh well just tried this twice now and no good I'm afraid, everything was looking OK until right at the end after re-booting and then up pops the security message, could go back and disable this I know but this shouldn't happen.

Paul,

Sounds like your 'nasty' has found a home and really doesn't want to leave. Have you run any full scans from safe mode? In order of preference I'd recommend 360, Malwarebytes, the free version of their scanner, then Norton Power Eraser. If the problem remains after all that let us know. There is still more help available.

Hi Dick,

OK thanks for that I'll give it a go and get back to you.

I've tried what you said still no change in windows security, still saying I don't have a firewall or anti virus, only thing left is the Norton Power Eraser, where do I find that ??

Thanks

Paul,

It's here:  http://us.norton.com/support/DIY/index.jsp

Dick,

Unfortunately that didn't work either, as you've said this is obviously somewhere deep in the system and maybe I'm just going to have to except it hey!!!

Paul

Try this:

Sometimes, unregistering and re-registering WMIUTILS.DLL file will fix this issue.

1. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 /u WMIUTILS.DLL

3. Click OK.

4. Restart the computer.

5. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

6. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 WMIUTILS.DLL

7. Click OK.

8. Restart the computer.

Please post back with the results.

OK let you know, will try later this evening.

Thanks

Paul,

Refresh me please. You've run 360 full scan, Norton Power Eraser full scan, Malwarebytes free version scanner full scan, Superantispyware free version full scan and nothing found. Which ones were run from safe mode? Do you have any other Norton products on your computer? After you save your settings adn identity safe data try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool that you can find here:http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20110217171332EN

By the way both of the free scanners mentioned above are Norton compatible so you can keep them around for whenever you feel the need for a second or third opinion. Since they do things a bit differently than your Norton product they may find things that Norton misses. 360 is very good but not perfect, sorry to have to give you that bit of bad news.

There's always a light on

Hello Paulcampion,

I have suggestion for You. im not sure if you have tried restarting security center service. these kind of issue can also be something to do with Windows security center service or its dependencies. You may verify Windows security center service on your computer and check if it exists / enabled. To verify do the following:

1.   Go to Start - start search box (vista / windows 7 ), start - run ( win xp) type services.msc and press enter.

2.   In the services windows scroll down and check if you have Security center service listed / enabled.

3.   If you have the service listed you may try to right click on the service and start the service.

Kindly revert back after checking this if not there are few steps with which we can fix this issue.

Thanks & Regards,

Sathish Duraivelu.
