I have had some new things happen recently.
1) I had an app hang up on shut down so I sent the minidump files and event log to a 'Windows related site".
They said the faulting drivers were all NIS: SYMDS64.SYS, SYMNETS.SYS, BHDrvx64 Program Data, IDSvia64 NIS, Symantec Heuristics Driver. I have no idea about this, to me If I would have waited and not forced a shut down there may have not been a problem.
2) I installed the support software for a new Western Digital Passport hard drive. After the install Windows said all security settings were off. Before I could change anything they came back on. At that time I noticed that under Firewall it said Windows Firewall was disabled. Norton was handling it.
3) I was persuaded to run a memory check software memtest86 and disc check. After those tests Windows said all security was off.
On the Windows security page I turned Norton on and left Windows Defender off.
Norton checks updates, does quick and full scans, reports history, and alerts to high CPU and disk usage. Considering this does it seem like the installation is okay?
What should the Widows Security settings be when using NIS?
Hi aberfoyle
Regarding the high cpu and disc usage I have been getting this for a couple of years with no problems, if you click on the more details when the little box appears you can check to see if it is trusted by Norton if its not then I think Norton would block it. I think one of them is svchost and I can’t remember the other ones. Regarding the security settings I contacted Norton through live chat and the representative said that Norton can run with windows defender but I have turned off windows firewall as the two firewalls may conflict with one another and Norton are the security specialists.

Thanks, actually I was saying high CPU and disc usage warning means that Norton was working.
I keep reading phrases like these in the Norton Community:
During installation Windows Defender is turned off and it says that during installation Windows Defender is turned off and it should remain off.
There is going to be duplication of services that may cause conflicts.
Windows Defender has a real time component to it that would interfere with NIS 2011
You should, at a minimum, disable the real-time setting in Windows Defender but preferably disable it altogether t prevent the possibility of conflicts
Those quotes seems to all be about NIS 2011, so maybe it is not that case now.
I know that Windows Firewall should be off.
