My computer recently had to have a fresh installation of Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 due Windows file corruption. I've identified that it is Windows Updates that are causing the problem however, Microsoft will not touch the problem with a 100 foot pole unless I pay $150 for them to link to my system and fix the problem. I'm uncertain as to which update(s) have caused the problem as it was an automated download of updates. I ususally don't have my system set to automatically install updates from Microsoft but since this was a fresh installation I hadn't had the chance to make the changes before the process of updating began. I have run the SFC /Scannow command which persistantly tells me that it has found and fixed corrupted files but for all intents and purposes it has not fixed the problem an it is in the elevated command prompt. I have the CBS logfile that was created but it is way to large to upload for review. The system is multi-boot with Windows XP Professional SP3 x86, Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 and Windows 7 SP1 x64; all systems are fully up-to-date; NIS 2012 is also installed and fully up-to-date (For privacy purposes I need the local ID Safe). System hardware is Core i7, 12GB RAM and nVidia GeForce GT430.
If you know when the updates were installed, or when you started seeing problems, you could uninstall all the updates from or around that date. Then slowly re install the updates until you find the one that is causing the problem.
Go to Control panel - Programs - Programs and Features - Installed updates. Click on the update you want to remove and click uninstall.
Thanks, for your reply. I've had to re-install the OSes on my system but I've identified the problem update as the Windows Driver Framework 1.11 update for Windows Vista. I did some research and Microsoft's own support forums are lit up with users complaining about this update messing up their computers'' an causing file corruption. To me it falls into the category of Microsoft broke it so Microsoft should fix it. For now the only fix is not to install this update.
