I had been successful in backing up files with Norton Backup Online...Windows 7/Firefox 12.0...and plugged into Internet through cable modem. I switched to a wireless mobile internet device, and I can no longer back up my system. The computer icon on the home page has a red X in the lower right corner of the icon (actually a white X in a red circle). When I go to back up, the usual bar appears on the right of the screen indicating Backup In Progress, Awaiting Agent Backup. And that persists for a very very very long time with nothing seemingly getting backed up.
I availed myself of a Symantec tech chat, and was told that the wireless device was the problem, that essentially it couldn't be used because of the intermittant nature of the connection. Can anyone confirm or deny? Or provide any further help?
Thank you to anyone who can come to my aid! It seems strange, to say the least, that Norton Online Backup would not support a wireless mobile internet connection...
It will work with any active internet connection regardless if its connected via an ethernet cable, mobile broadband or wireless. What the agent informed you was partially correct though. Wireless is susceptible to drop outs and can result in the backups getting cut off. The awaiting agent backup is the Norton Online Backup web component waiting for your computer to respond.
Norton Online Backup does have re-try logic built in but it will eventually give up if it can't get a stable connection. If the issue is still persisting let me know and we can try some troubleshooting steps.
I am still having difficulties backing up. On two occasions, most recently June 21, when I booted up my computer, somehow NOBU automatically started up and ran successfully. However, when I try to run backup myself, like I am trying to do right now, O am stuck "Awaiting agent backup"
It would be helpful at this point to run through the troubleshooting. Thanks!
When it states it's awaiting agent backup login to your account via nobu.backup.com. What does the computer, that you're actively trying to backup, say its status is? It'll reference awaiting agent backup, offline, backing up, etc.
If it says its offline right click on the system tray icon, located on your computer, and select Check for Updates. Once done click on Home from the NOBU web page and see if the status changes.
Have you tried plugging the computer in via a wired connection from the back of your wireless router? Almost all wireless routers should have at least a couple of external ports you can hard wire into. We'd want to see if the behavior is the same.
What I'm trying to see is if the behavior is the same or not. Since we know it was working when you were directly connected to the modem we can rule that part out.
Thank you again for your reply. I still am having the same problem. I checked to make sure I have the latest NOBU update - I do. I plugged the wireless device in the USB port on my computer - doesn't help.
Here is what happens when I try to back up my system. When I click on Backup Now, I go to a screen and on the right-hand side it reads Backup in Progress...there is a bar underneath that with green traveling squares...underneath that it says Awaiting Agent Backup. Nothing happens from there, the page is stuck there for good. When I have had a successful backup in the past, I get the other messages you referenced in your note.
The other thing to note is that the computer icon on the left hand side of the screen has an X in a red circle on it.
One more thing to add to my reply below. When I boot up the next day after failed attempts to backup, NOBU automatically loads and proceeds to backup successfully. If I reboot my system the same day as the failed attempts, that does not happen - the automatic NOBU load and successful backup only occurs on the following day.
Originally I set up for manual backup. I have since switched to a daily automatic backup, to see if that makes any difference.
